Soundz of Spirit

Unlike any other hip-hop documentary to date, Soundz of Spirit is an award winning riveting feature length documentary film directed by filmmaker Joslyn Rose Lyons, that explores the relationship between the spiritual connection and creative process, in hip-hop culture. Soundz features in-depth interviews and behind the scenes footage with The Last Poets, KRS-One, Common, Andre 3000, Cee-Lo, Talib Kweli, Martin Luther, Planet Asia, Hieroglyphics crew, Shock G, Goapele, Medusa, Mystic, Aceyalone, The Grouch, Living Legends, Davey D, Bionic Man, Zion I, Chali 2NA, Rakaa Iriscience of Dilated Peoples, DJ QBert, Saul Williams, Michael Franti and many other artists, dj's, dancers and mc's in the hip hop community. After premiering at the HBO Urban World Film Festival, the documentary traveled extensively through the international film festival circuit from the Black International Cinema Berlin and London Raindance, to Blacksoil in Rotterdam, Europe, Denver Pan African, Los Angeles International Ind. Film Festival and with the International Hip Hop Film Festival in Canada and Australia. Soundz of Spirit was named Best Music Documentary by the New York International Independent Film & Video Festival in 2005. Joslyn Rose Lyons went on to executive produce an original 14-track soundtrack to accompany the films limited DVD release, which included original tracks from artists including Cee-Lo, Blackalicious, Del the Funky Homosapien, and Hope Shorter. The film received it's television broadcast premiere on FreeSpeech TV in 2006 and was made a permanent fixture in the International Museum of Women "Imagining Ourselves" online exhibition.
