Miriam Lee (Gladys Brockwell) is a poor drudge until she meets Joe Valdez (Bertram Grassby). She knows nothing of his past -- that he was run out of a mining town after stealing the wife of Jim Calvert (Norbert Myles) or that Calvert is seeking vengeance. When Miriam's father discovers that she has been intimate with Valdez, he throws her out of the house, and Valdez stages a mock marriage. Miriam is none the wiser, and when Valdez takes over a gambling club, she helps him by luring customers to the establishment. Valdez thinks Lucky Carson (Charles Clary) is just another mark, but he figures out Miriam's game right away. He also recognizes Valdez and sends word to Calvert, who immediately comes to New York. He shoots Valdez dead, and Carson informs Miriam that she was never really married.
