In 1939, an intrepid reporter in New York City makes a connection between the story she's covering, of famous scientists suddenly disappearing around the world, and a recent attack on the city by giant robots. Determined to find the solution to these happenings, she seeks the help of her ex-boyfriend, the Captain of a mercenary legion of pilots. The two are investigating the case when the robots attack the city again, though in a stroke of luck, Sky Captain Harry Joseph "Joe" Sullivan's right-hand man Dex (Giovanni Ribisi) is able to locate their source. They then set off on an adventure in search of the evil mastermind behind these schemes, who is bent on creating a utopia and destroying the current world.

Gwyneth Paltrow: Action Star?

The just-released Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow marks Gwyneth Paltrow's first real sci-fi/action film. She plays Polly Perkins, a classic Lois Lane-type reporter who means to get her story at any cost. "It was a tremendous amount of fun," Paltrow says. "I just loved how sassy she was and sneaky and out for herself in that sort of '40s-era broad way." Apple's mom says she took the role "only because this was something totally different. I probably wouldn't do Catwoman. There is something incredibly appealing about Catwoman, being that woman and playing that part. But if I was going to take something on, I wanted it to be something that nobody had ever seen or done. And if it was going to fail, it was going to fail, but I wanted to take that risk and not be in a standard Hollywood adventure movie." Tomorrow, appropriately enough, Jude Law debuts in the next big action flick, Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow. He's also in a slew of other movies — Alfie, I Heart Huckabees, The Aviator, Closer and Lemony Snicket's A Series of Unfortunate Events — all set to be released this year. So when asked which role required golden-blond highlights in his hair, the busy Law looks absolutely baffled for a moment. "I've just had a summer of [shooting] additional footage for the 26 films I've got coming out," he laughs, "so I'm trying to remember which hairdo this is. [I think] it was lightened for Alfie. I just had to do some photos for that." It's hard to imagine that too much of the dreamy 31-year-old Briton could ever be a bad thing. Still, does he worry folks will get sick of him?
