When chemist Martin Fellman learns that his beautiful wife's charming cousin is returning from India after a long absence and has sent a dagger ahead as a gift, he begins to have a series of bizarre, terrifying dreams. In them, he tries to stab his wife with a dagger. Since these nightmares began, Fellman has developed a phobia of sharp blades. He can no longer touch knives or similar objects without developing obsessive thoughts. One day, he succumbs so completely to his delusion that he attempts to stab his wife. At the last moment, his hand hesitates, and Feldmann flees the house. He finds refuge with his mother and follows her advice to seek help from a psychoanalyst. In long sessions, the fragments of a troubled psyche come together. Will the still-young field of psychoanalysis succeed in healing a person and restoring his life?
