Crisply stylish and suspenseful, making brilliant use of optical special effects, PREDATOR is one of Schwarzenegger's best. Director McTiernan (DIE HARD) nimbly sustains suspense throughout this tale of a special forces platoon assigned to locate an unnamed menace lurking in the jungles of Central America. The film is one of the cleverest of the many action pictures that allegorize Vietnam--its hardbitten soldiers, ill used by a government that lies to them about the real nature of their mission, face an invisible enemy that picks them off using guerilla tactics. In the end, however, the creature proves curiously sympathetic, and its final confrontation with Major Dutch Schaefer (Schwarzenegger) has tragic overtones.
