Franco Zeffirelli's version of the classic Verdi opera stars Teresa Stratas as Violetta and Placido Domingo as her lover, Alfredo. Zeffirelli outdoes himself this time, offering no less than one of cinema's finest opera adaptations. LA TRAVIATA boasts not only the presence of Domingo and the electrifying Stratas but some truly amazing camerawork. The camera dollies, zooms, cranes and pans relentlessly showcase the gigantic, elaborately constructed set. Indeed, cinematographer Ennio Guarnieri and art designer Gianni Quaranta have joined forces with Zeffirelli to present a feast for the eyes--a worthy accompaniment to the brilliant score.
