A quintessential gangster film for Paramount, featuring their three biggest bad men on the lot: Naish, Tamiroff, and Quinn. Tamiroff is a mob boss in Chinatown. He's convinced henchman Quinn has double-crossed him by having one of his fighters lose a heavily wagered match. He sends Naish

to show Quinn a proper response, but instead Quinn talks Naish into conspiring to kill Tamiroff and then splitting his territories 50-50. They wound the boss and he is nursed back to health by doctor Wong. She is the daughter of Tamiroff's old rival Toler, but discovers that her father really

wasn't murdered by this gangster, as she had thought for so long. Meanwhile, the two confederates wage a bloody battle in dividing the spoils and then hear that their former employer is still alive. They decide to bump him off properly this time as he recovers at home. Tamiroff has fallen in love

with Wong and proposes to her, but she tells him she wants to do relief work for the raging war in China. He is grateful for her care and gives her $50,000 for the cause. Enter would-be killer Naish. He exclaims that he and Quinn are the killers of Wong's father and are now going to be rid of

Tamiroff as well. He dies, but not as expected, for he succumbs to a heart attack as Naish points the gun. Neat and quick, the film moves at a nice pace in its 56-minute run. Despite some bad editing early in the film, this is an interesting thriller with a great cast.
