A sequel to PROM NIGHT (1980) in name only (although Peter Simpson repeats his chores as producer), this film begins with a prolog set in 1957, as prom queen Mary Lou Maloney (Lisa Schrage) is accidentally burned to death by her jilted boy friend just as she is about to receive her tiara.

Thirty years later the culprit, now played by Michael Ironside, is the principal of the school, his past indiscretion seemingly forgotten. It's just a few days prior to this year's prom and wholesome teen Vicki (Wendy Lyon) is a nominee for queen. Unfortunately, the vengeful spirit of Mary Lou

possesses Vicki and we're off to a gore-a-thon. Director Bruce Pittman, who was Oscar-nominated for his 1984 short, "The Painted Door," shows promise, and does manage to squeeze some suspense and surprise out of a few scenes, especially a confrontation between the possessed Vicki and one of her

girl friends in the school locker room. There are also good special effects from Jim Doyle, who worked on A NIGHTMARE ON ELM STREET and used his budget well to achieve some fine, eerie moments, including a hobby horse that comes to life and a blackboard that suddenly turns into a swirling black

pool. But ultimately it's all too predictable. Followed by PROM NIGHT III: THE LAST KISS.
