Uneven but sometimes fascinating murder mystery. Three bodies are found in Moscow's Gorky Park, stripped of their faces and fingertips, making identification nearly impossible. William Hurt, in a highly polished performance, plays the Moscow police inspector assigned to the case. His trail

leads to an American fur trader (Lee Marvin) who has all of Moscow at his disposal. A young dissident (Joanna Pacula), who was a friend of one of the victims, also gets caught in the intrigue. Though a little confusing at times, this mystery, based on the Martin Cruz Smith bestseller, has some

great twists and gives a harshly realistic picture of the average man's life behind the Iron Curtain. GORKY suffers from the miscasting of Marvin, an unrealistic romance and, most unfortunately, a plodding climax. It was filmed in Helsinki, since the Soviets refused permission to shoot in

Moscow.
