Gene Hackman plays Jack McCann, a rich man whose life lost its meaning when he gained his wealth. He lives on an isolated island, constantly afraid of someone taking his money. Joe Pesci is Mayakovsky, an unscrupulous gambling-resort developer who wants to build a resort on McCann's island and turns nasty when McCann refuses him permission.
