El Perro del Hortelano is a shining example of a completely new way of producing socially conscious films. Set in the far reaches of the Peruvian Amazon, a group of 15 international volunteers joined forced with local indigenous youth to make a film about the most pressing social and environmental conflicts in the region. No shoes, no shirt, no script, no problem! Living and working together everyday for three months, our team produced 'El Perro del Hortelano', a feature narrative fiction about the threats of foreign development in the Amazon, the dangers of oil drilling interests, and the power of art and culture to lead a community.
