Dr. Arnold Fanck, the father of the German "Mountain Film" genre, was the guiding force behind Der Weisse Rausch. The title translates as "White Intoxication," referring to the otherwise indescribable euphoria of mountain-climbing. Future director Leni Riefenstahl, Fanck's most famous (and notorious) protegee, stars as a young sports enthusiasts whose affections are divided between two Hamburg carpenters. For the heroine's sake, the boys train themselves to be expert skiers -- which explains why the roles are played by real-life skiing champions Guzzi Lantscher and Walter Riml. The film was released outside Germany under a variety of titles, including The White Frenzy, The White Ecstasy and The Ski Chase.
