Director Doillon teamed with his wife, Birkin, to present this intensely emotional story about relationships, which delivers its serious subject matter in a somewhat comically. French pop star Souchon and Birkin are lovers who go on holiday to the former's summer home in the south of

France. Birkin instantly becomes consumed by jealousy as she considers all the women Souchon entertained there. She has had only a few lovers, but has fantasized about many others. As their visit continues, the atmosphere grows more tense. They play out fantasy roles--a milkman, a prostitute, a

busboy--to overcome their destructive jealousies. While Birkin has contempt for Souchon's numerous past lovers, Souchon attacks Birkin's equally numerous fantasy lovers. They eventually come to terms and profess their love for each other. Virtually plotless, this film concentrates on the emotional

state of its characters. Souchon is excellent, but it is the magnificent Birkin who carries the weight of the film. She began her working relationship with Doillon (whom she later married) in 1981 with the controversial LA FILLE PRODIGUE (The Prodigal Daughter), in which she was cast as Michel

Piccoli's mentally unstable daughter. Originally, COMEDY! was intended to be more obviously comic with a variety of characters entering and leaving Souchon's home. Instead Doillon ingeniously decided to let Birkin and Souchon play the other roles. Beautifully photographed by Lubtchansky and

featuring an end-credits song sung by Souchon and Birkin, COMEDY! did little business in France, though it was presented in competition at the Venice Film Festival. (In French; English subtitles.)
