Is a character study of Claire Cummings, the San Francisco Tribune's society columnist who aspires to the life of those about who she writes, both in wanting the money and the prestige. The easiest way for her to accomplish her goal is to marry into it, although a husband may become unwanted baggage if he learns her motives, meaning that she has to get rid of him in some way. Her getting married leaves other past lovers in her wake, including newspaper colleagues Les Burns and Al Herrick, both who would have wanted to marry her themselves but who did not have the stature to allow her to reach her goal. While somewhat admitting to herself that she may have loved only one, she still would not be averse to using him to his demise if it got her money and power.
