Battle Beyond the Stars Reviews

This pleasant sci-fi picture owes its inspiration to several other movies, including THE MAGNIFICENT SEVEN, which, in turn, owes its life to THE SEVEN SAMURAI. Ambitiously expensive by New World's standards, the film concerns a pacifist planet attacked by a bunch of bad guys. The outter-space peaceniks have to get someone to defend them, so they hire Cowboy (George Peppard). Sybil Danning plays a mercenary whose libido is fired by war; Richard Thomas is heroic. John Sayles' screenplay never takes itself seriously, so the badinage is relaxed and often funny, avoiding the ponderous. Morgan Woodward is wasted, but Sam Jaffe does a nice turn as an arms merchant.
