Überraschung. Mutter Irene (Gudrun Ritter) hat eine wunderbare Idee: Ein Strandurlaub in Bulgarien für die ganze Familie inklusive Tochter Ines' (Odette Bereska) neuem Freund Jonas (René Rudolph), alias "Johnny". Doch zunächst fällt das Echo bei den anderen verhalten aus, Überzeugungsarbeit muss geleistet werden. Das junge Pärchen hatte eigentlich eigene Reisepläne. Als endlich alle gemeinsam im Zug Richtung Nessebar sitzen, reagiert "Johnny" sehr verschreckt über die offerierten Verlobungsringe und nimmt als erster Reißaus. Nur Ines schafft die geplante Bahnreise. Für die anderen gilt: Viele Wege führen nach Nessebar - und es sind nicht die schlechtesten. "Und nächstes Jahr am Balaton" ist ein unterhaltsam und flott inszenierter Sommerfilm über jugendliche Liebe, Fernweh und ehemalige Grenzen des Reisens. "Ein Film gegen Mief und Muff und dadurch ein bisschen mehr als bloß ein freundlicher Urlaubsfilm", urteilte der westdeutsche Filmkritiker Heinz Kersten.
