It is the winter season on the Riviera, and Baron Harington finds that an old friend of his, Lady Brookes, is staying with her husband at the villa. He calls upon her unannounced, first sending a note to her husband to lure him to keep a fictitious appointment at the club. Towards midnight the Baron, leaving the villa by climbing down from the balcony, is seen and apprehended by the police. Almost at the same moment a tragic scene is taking place within the villa. A thief has entered, and encountering Lady Brookes, kills her in his fear. Her cries are heard by the little group outside and by the returning husband. All rush in and find the body of the dead woman. The Baron is overwhelmed by the tragedy and confesses to being the writer of the letter. Sir Brookes, half mad with fear and rage, fires his revolver at him, but the bullet falls wild, and although the discovery of the thief establishes the innocence of the Baron in the matter of the crime, he turns to leave with the weight of the crime and the knowledge of his own wrongdoing heavy upon him.
