The title might well describe anyone lured into renting this video release by the cassette's false promise of a romantic comedy starring Sandra Bullock.

Filmed in 1989, six years before Bullock became a box-office draw on the basis of SPEED and WHILE YOU WERE SLEEPING, this really stars Jonathan Penner as ad man Morris Codman who, after receiving a message from God (George Plimpton), tries to cash in by starting a new religion. He incorporates The Preferent Church, and hires janitor-philosopher Ian Clarity (Gerald Orange) as a figurehead. The church espouses a lifestyle of conscience-free, personal selfishness, and is a big hit with amoral businesspeople. This is too much for Codman's idealistic girlfriend Debby (Bullock), so she dumps him. The new religion is a success, and Codman and Clarity get rich, but there's still something missing from their lives. After Clarity is seen giving money to a beggar--a Preferent sin-- and Debby is mugged by a disciple, Codman decides to give it all up. He comes clean before the press, gives his fortune to the poor, and reunites with Debby.

Bullock has only a small role in this clunker, and she's fine. A FOOL AND HIS MONEY basically expands on Michael Douglas' "Greed is Good" motto from WALL STREET, but the production is too shabby-looking to approach the level of satire. Even as straightforward whimsy it fails. As if the FOOL AND HIS MONEY experience wasn't made unpleasant enough by the charisma-free team of Penner and Orange, sound quality is harsh and tinny, and the music is lousy. "Preferent" is spelled four different ways in the film, if that's indication of anything. In addition to Plimpton, literati Jerzy Kosinski and Tama Janowitz join Bullock in the cameo parade. (Profanity.)
