Lillian Walker, a strategist at Waterhouse, a New York City venture capital firm, has long wanted a promotion to senior strategist. Although Mr. Waterhouse always seems to skirt the issue of a promotion whenever Lillian has been close to asking, he has noticed her and infers that he will consider a promotion based on the first company she takes from recommendation for evaluation to that evaluation report. The company she chooses is Love Subscription, a personalized subscription gift service for the person who doesn't know what to give as gifts for their loved ones. She became aware of the company when her friend Phil, a notoriously uninspired gift giver, used the service to buy his girlfriend and Lillian's best friend Annie what were the perfect gifts. Lillian choosing this company is despite her own negative view of gifts as her ex-fiancé Bradley showered her with gifts as a substitution for real affection. Lillian and the Love Subscription's hands-on founder/CEO Grant Fletcher butt heads immediately as Grant, who works largely on emotion, wants an investment but not the meddling by outsiders which he fears will lose the magic of what makes the company so special, such meddling by especially people like Lillian who look solely at the bottom line. Their animosity is so strong that Lillian, who sees Grant as a disorganized flake, doesn't even want to do the deep dive into the company to complete the report. What neither Lillian or Grant want to divulge to the other is that they need the other to achieve their professional goals. As they spend more time together, they begin to see the other's perspective of what's good for the company and as Lillian changes her mind that the company would indeed be a good investment on the changes to which she and Grant agree. They also start to fall for each other. What happens between them is affected by some misunderstandings, including about Waterhouse's potential investment and about Bradley who reenters Lillian's life.
