• Studied mechanical engineering in college
• Began working as an engineering consultant after college
• On receiving a scholarship from the Binghamton University, grabbed a master's degree in industrial engineering
• Attended a few lectures on filmmaking while in New York
• Joined a New York-based firm as a graphic designer
• Returned to India with a hope to become a director and started working as an assistant to Mani Ratnam
• Made his debut as an actor in the movie Paruthiveeran (2005)
• Bagged the Filmfare Award for Best Actor in Tamil for his debut role
• In 2006, founded Makkal Nala Mandram, an organisation with an aim to involve his fans to become socially responsible citizens
• Strongly supports the promotion of spreading awareness about lysosomal storage disease
• Adopted a white tiger cub at Vandalur Zoo, contributing money for its protection and welfare
