• Often promoted non-profit organizations geared toward helping combat hunger amongst children and would later serve as a consultant for the World Hunger Conference
• Bullied as a child during WWI due to his German surname, he began to find solace in his school's theater department and drama club
• After several years of success on television, he would move to feature films later in his career with titles that included "The Heartbreak Kid" for which he would be nominated for an Oscar
• Began his career on Broadway in the early 1930s, but took a hiatus to serve in WWII and subsequently returned to show business with favorites such as CBS's "Green Acres"
• Served as a covert spy for the U․S․ Army prior to WWII, acting as a clown and high-wire artist with a traveling circus while also photographing German U-boats docked in Mexican harbors
• Despite graduating from the University of Minnesota with a business degree, he was forced to take on several odd jobs following the stock market crash of 1929 that included trapeze performer, insurance salesman and nightclub singer
