As soon as Don Diego and Bernardo arrive in Monterey to look into an import business, they are attacked and robbed by two men who expected them to be carrying a large amount of money belonging to the investors who sent them. Because a number of investors have been robbed on the road, they had decided not to bring the money yet. Suspicious as to how the robbers knew the exact amount they were supposed to carry, Diego suspects that the owner of the import business might be involved.

Diego sets a trap by telling Verdugo that the people bringing the investors' money will be coming to Monterey via the Guadalupe trail, when in fact they are supposed to be using the Camino Real. Unfortunately, Garcia and Reyes, who are bringing the money, decide they will try to outsmart the robbers by taking the Guadalupe trail instead, therefore falling into the robbers' hands.

This doesn't go over well with Theresa, the tamale peddler, who wrongfully blames Sergeant Garcia for the new rule before Don Diego promises to go talk to Rico. Diego's efforts are unsuccessful however, and Joaquin Castenada, Theresa's hot-headed boyfriend, gets into trouble with the especiales, led by the cruel Captain Briones, and his locked in jail. Now it's up to Zorro to save him before it's too late.

Don Diego is relieved that the crisis is nearing its end, but Bernardo is not so sure.

But Anita is in danger from Ruiz and Jose, who have already found her father, and hold him for ransom until she brings her gold to them in exchange.

Diego brings something the youth wrote in Chinese characters to a priest to interpret. But an American seaman arrives and claims the boy is a murderer.
