She was given up by her adoptive parents and eventually sent to live with a foster family (the Allens) at age 15. Her foster father (William Allen) began to sexually abuse her causing his wife to leave him, and Coomber with him. He wanted to teach Coomber how to be a woman and cure her of "her lesbianism and how best to do that would be to have sex with her." He had her emancipated at age 16 so that what he was doing was "not breaking the law in any way." She became pregnant with his child and gave birth to a daughter at age 17 but she reluctantly gave the baby up for adoption. After finishing high school, her aspirations of becoming a runway model were crushed, being told she was too short. At 20-years-old, she moved in with a man she was dating and began using drugs. After their son was born, he kicked his drug habit but Lynch did not. She eventually left him and supported her son and her drug addiction through shoplifting and prostitution. After several arrests and some time behind bars, Lynch and her son moved to Buffalo, New York. Her landlady was 81-year-old Louise Cicelsky, a widow who owned the house. On May 19, 1995, Cicelsky was found dead in her ransacked home, stabbed eight times in the neck. Police first became suspicious of Lynch when she called Cicelsky's residence while they were processing the scene, claiming to be the victim's niece and wanting to know what was going on.
