William Wisting is on sick leave after being hit by a car in the previous series. He is undergoing physical therapy, making slow but steady progress. An envelope is placed in his mail box. Inside is a case number for murder of a young woman. With nothing else to do, he uses his computer access to police archives and turns up an avenue of investigation that was not pursued. Could the victim's ex boyfriend, convicted of her murder, be innocent? Could the last person to see her alive, who was later convicted of a similar murder, be the real killer? The detective who made the case against the ex boyfriend isn't happy about Wisting's queries. Then the case files disappear and and Wisting's archives access is revoke. Then there's a death police are calling an accident but Wisting is skeptical.
