Jack tells everyone he has a very important, famous guest. To make his show stage look better he asks Grace to help decorate. When Jack's guest doesn't show, he makes Grace his last-minute replacement and she shares some of her positive thoughts about gay men. But when the show airs, an important part of her speech is missing. Karen makes Rosario stay at Will and Grace's apartment because she's angry that Rosario knew and concealed that Stan was still alive. Will tries to help Karen with her anger about Stan lying about his death by making her tear down the imaginative wall she has built up, which leads to an all-new sensitive Karen.

Will reveals that he doesn't know how to swim. Jack convinces him to learn it and acts as Will's instructor. Karen invites Grace to a blind date with her and Malcolm. But, while Karen and Malcolm have quite a good time, Grace is rather annoyed by her date. When Grace asks Karen how she could think that Dale would be the right guy for her, she tells Grace that she is a "snob". To prove that Karen is wrong, Grace goes on another date with Dale.

On a Red Eye flight to London for the weekend with Will, Grace checks for celebrities on board. She meets no stars, but she discovers that Leo is in first class. After an airplane-toilet makeover, Grace tries to act like bumping into him is a total surprise. While they talk, Will flirts with flight attendants to get food, drinks, and a better seat. Back in New York, Jack tries to convince Karen to rehire Rosario, but the new maid threatens to hurt him if he makes Karen fire her. Of course Karen doesn't believe Jack's reports of her aggressive maid.

Jack plans to move into a bigger place. Will helps Jack find an apartment, and then they go to the zoo to see two gay penguins. There they meet Rose, who want to file a petition against the penguins' planned separation. When she tells Will how sad they'll feel without each other, he feels like she's talking about him. Grace shops with Karen for a good dress to wear for her Christmas-card picture. During their trip they meet Beverley, who tells them that his wife Crystal passed away and invites them to her memorial service, where he shows them one of her beautiful dresses. Grace thinks it would be perfect for her Christmas-card picture..

Bobbi comes to Grace's for dinner. Because Grace always complains about her mother, Jack says she should learn to appreciate her and offers to help her improve their relationship, but she refuses... although his words seem to have some effect. Meanwhile, Will starts working at a non-profit organization and the first person he's supposed to file a lawsuit against is Karen, about an unfixed building. Will offers her a way out of the lawsuit by telling her about the lawsuit and ordering her to fix the building.

Karen, Grace, Jack and Will visit Will's family over the Christmas break. Will's brother Sam and his two children are there, too. Everyone suspects that Sam's son Jordy is gay. Worried that his mother would freak out about having another homosexual in the family, Will tries to stop Jack from encouraging Jordy in his gay antics, and even forbids the boy to put on a Christmas show. Grace, who always had a thing for Sam, tries to get closer to him, but he cuts her off every time she tries to talk to him. When she confronts him about avoiding her, it turns out that he's still attracted to her.

Everybody dresses up as their favorite characters for the "Sound of Music" sing-along. Will ends up at the wrong address, but luckily meets a handsome guy. Meanwhile, Grace feels a little misplaced as Maria without her Captain von Trapp when Will decides to stay with his attractive new acquaintance, leaving Grace along at the theater to sing songs from the movie to children in the theater. Karen throws her flask off the balcony and she and Jack must find it quickly, before anyone else does, because her name is on it.

The final season's second live episode is totally set in Karen's bathroom. She hosts a birthday party for herself for the first time and invites Will, Jack, and Grace. Then they learn that she's been holding this party for the last 10 years.

Jack has the flu and Karen offers to look after him at her mansion. There he sees a whole new part of it and finds what she calls "the forbidden room." She doesn't tell him what's behind the locked door and he tries to figure out what it could be. Grace meets Margot at the coffeehouse and Margot asks Grace to design the law firm.

Grace and Will are having dinner with Rob and Ellen in a fancy restaurant. Rob and Ellen announce that they're separating. They see Vince, who's working as a waiter there. Will thinks this is sad, and what he doesn't know is that it's a cover: he's an undercover cop. Meanwhile, Jack and Karen go to a bowling center to meet Tommy, who wrote Jack that he liked his show and that he hasn't had the guts to come out as gay, and some women invite Karen to play on their team.

The four friends visit L.A. to check out UCLA with Elliot. Will bumps into James, whom he met at a theatre the night of the "Sound of Music Sing-Along" and he couldn't stop thinking about the whole time. It turns out that James is engaged to a girl named Claire, but just to get a Green Card since he is Canadian. But, Claire backs out of the faked marriage and James will have to leave the country in a few days. Being disappointed, Will wants to go back to New York. Jack tries to act like a dad making Elliot pay for his irresponsibility, but Elliot doesn't accept Jack as his father.

It is time for Grace's and James' Green Card wedding. Although Grace doesn't want to make a big deal of it, Karen organizes a wedding party and invites all of Grace's friends. But then, Grace feels sick and Will fears she has some doubt about the fake wedding. Though, the ceremony takes place, but during it, Grace still feels dizzy. This makes Will drag Grace out of the ceremony to talk to her.
