Jonah Mulray learns that his wife Megan, who spends half the year in Hong Kong, has died in a car crash there and flies out to identify the body with embassy official Sally Porter. He is shocked when a man called David Chen tells him that he has been married to Megan for twenty years and when a stranger, Reza, attacks him and steals his passport whilst David's daughter Leu is involved in demonstrations against the Xo corporation. Jonah confesses to Sally his confusion regarding Megan and sets out to investigate her death.
