Episode 1

The Trial

Josh is escorting prisoner Daniel Trenner back who declares he is innocent for a $400 bounty plus expenses. When they stop at a water hole, Josh is surprised by Sheriff Howard Catlett who put the wanted poster out for Trenner. After using Josh to capture the man on a fictitious charge, the sheriff takes the prisoner leaving Josh with no gun and runs off his horse. After Josh recovers his horse, he tracks the sheriff and Trenner to an abandoned house and barn. Once again Josh is caught off guard by Catlett who knocks him out. Josh finds himself a prisoner along with Trenner forced to wait until that evening to learn their fate. Three men dressed in Union uniforms enter the barn followed by Catlett donning his own Union uniform. Trenner recognizing the men thinks it is a reunion until slapped and told he is on trial. The court martial is conducted by the four former soldiers who believe the captive - their former lieutenant - deserted them in a rebel ambush six years earlier. Josh is appointed to defend the prisoner.

The Cure

Josh is tracking the local drunk Harry Simmons into the country where he has a bottle hidden in the weeds near a stream which Josh dumps. They return to town with Josh having to force Harry to skip the saloons and go to the general store run by Emily Kendrick. Josh is performing an intervention on the most eligible drunk in town for Emily. She tells Josh and Harry she wants the care-free alcoholic to appear respectable to his wealthy brother Alfred Simmons, when he arrives from staid Philadelphia. She has replied to Alfred's telegram for Harry telling Alfred he will be welcome. Josh moves in with Harry at his house which Emily has cleaned and redecorated against Harry's wishes. After 15 years apart from his brother, Harry Simmons couldn't care less, but homely store-owner Emily hopes to trick Harry into marriage, as part of his makeover. So she pays Josh a hefty bounty on Harry: Wanted Dead or Sober.

Journey for Josh

Josh arrives in Payson City to pick up his prisoner to transport to Allenton for trial. The less than friendly Sheriff Tom Brice to bounty hunters brings the prisoner out to the surprised Josh. the prisoner is the beautiful Susan Marno who is a partner with Lawrence Thayer on whom the bounty has been doubled. Josh takes care to use a safer route as Thayer is said to be in the area. The relationship between them is frosty that evening at camp. Josh tries to be kind but doesn't fall for her attempt to knock him out with a rock. The next day a rain storm forces them to take shelter in an abandoned homesteader's cabin. When they hear another horse, Josh worried it might be Thayer stops the man at gunpoint upon entering but is Nick Peters taking refuge from the rain. He has eyes for Susan who returns the looks. When Josh and Susan start to leave the next morning, Nick tries to take her but she aids Josh instead. The two find they love each other pushing Josh to make an unusual decision as events unfold in an unexpected way.

The Looters

Three convicts are in jail at River City passing the time with the Sheriff awaiting the arrival of a bounty hunter to transport them to the scaffold at Jessup's Corner. At the same time the bounty hunter, Josh, is riding toward the town when a tornado hits it. The sheriff is killed and the three convicts break loose. As they look over the disaster in the town from the sheriff's office window, the leader, Eli, picks up the Sheriff's badge from his body and appoints Chum the new Sheriff with Frank as his deputy and Eli as "town advisor". They decide to go for a drink to celebrate stopping on the way to tell attorney Phineos Porter there will be no lawyers in River City. In the saloon Eli decides entertainer Lucy is his new girl - against her will. They decide to arrest the owner Leonard appointing the bartender the new judge who willingly goes along for a free drink. Josh arrives to find the dead sheriff and empty jail. He heads to the saloon where he finds himself arrested and jailed by the new city officials.

The Twain Shall Meet

As Josh prepares to leave his hotel room in Allenville to pursue outlaw Jack Torrance, a man knocks on his door. Upon entering, the man, Arthur Pierce Madison, introduces himself as a journalist from Boston in the west to do a series of articles on it including one on a bounty hunter. He was referred to Josh by a friend in the east. Although Madison behaves like a pretentious dandy, Josh agrees to let him trail along. At his first stop for supplies, Josh suggests Madison pick up a pistol for protection but Madison says he dislikes guns. Madison finally agrees to buy a revolver so Josh decides to teach him to shoot. Madison's marksmanship, however, surprises Josh. Madison tells Josh that he had been on the pistol team in college. On the road they are ambushed by Torrance's partner Sid Gonda. With Madison's help, Josh captures Gonda but is forced to release him when Madison, who opposes violence, forces Josh to drop his gun, by, ironically, threatening to shoot Josh in the leg. Although Josh is peeved, the duo trail Gonda to Center City where Josh finds Gonda dead in a barn. Torrance, who had been hiding, disarms them at gunpoint but during fisticuffs Josh knocks Torrance out and he and Madison escape. Josh collects his usual bounty for bringing Torrance to justice, then he and Madison part ways amicably.

Episode 6

The Showdown

A dressed up Josh is in Jessup Corners at the saloon getting a date for a buggy ride with the glamorous Kitty Conners when Sheriff Walt Spence walks up to tell him his friend Johnny Haywood is in jail and will hang for robbing the express office. Josh goes with Walt to the jail to visit Johnny who is a close friend who once saved Josh's life. Josh tells Johnny he will get an attorney for him but there isn't much else Josh can do. Johnny grabs Josh who even in his dress clothes carries a small pocket derringer that Johnny takes. He has Josh call to Walt who is forced to drop his gun and be locked in the cell with Josh. Once released Josh has to skip the date to go looking for Johnny. His first stop is Johnny's house to see his wife Gloria. While there Walt arrives to say they found Johnny's body in a gorge where he must have fallen off his horse. Later, at the hotel as Josh prepares to leave, Deputy Evans arrives with Johnny's effects - minus a wedding ring. Josh realizes the case isn't closed yet.

Surprise Witness

Josh brings in Carlos Domingo wanted for murder while three members of Domingo's gang watch on the street. The local barber Leon Faber comes to Sheriff George Mason's office to identify Domingo as the man he saw commit the murder so Mason locks up Domingo. Josh noticing Domingo's gang visits Faber's shop for a haircut plus talk to Faber about providing him protection. As Faber prepares his instruments, a man riding by shoots Faber in the back through the window killing him. Mason is forced to release Domingo who rides off with his gang giving them orders to kill any other witnesses against him if they pop up. Josh wanting revenge for Faber tracks Domingo to his upset and drunk girlfriend Evelyn Martinson who tells Josh that Domingo went to see his mother but she refuses to talk to him. That is where he holds all of his meetings to plan raids. Josh visits Mrs. Domingo after Carlos and his gang leave. As she is upset with her son, Josh concocts a plan to arrest and pressure Domingo to reveal who was behind the Faber shooting.

To the Victor

Josh is headed for the town of Coronado but is taken out of his way by a sign changed by a woman. As he enters the town he sees men doing laundry, darning, and other tasks usually handled by women. Sheriff Mike Strata spotting Josh tells him to come quietly and quickly with him to the saloon. There he finds a group of desperate men led by the Sheriff. They offered him $500 in their message but Josh upon hearing the problem is not interested. The women of Coronado refuse to do any of their usual work until the men all put away their guns. They have taken up residence in the Town Hall coming out only at 4:00 pm each day to buy food at the general store. In addition, they have traded in their dresses for shirts and britches. Once the men agree to pay him the $500 whether he succeeds or not at the end of a week, Josh accepts the job. He tries unsuccessfully to convince the ring leader - the sheriff's daughter Liz - to end strike but instead Josh strikes out. He soon realizes it will take a stronger effort.

Criss Cross

Josh brings young Tom Adams wanted for robbery in to Sheriff Hal Mortensen for the $200 reward plus his $28 in expenses. However, Mortensen tells Tom he is free to go and Josh that Zack Dawson is now wanted for the robbery. He had sent out telegrams and new posters five days earlier but Josh never saw them. They found $500 from the robbery hidden on Dawson's place plus he had bragged about it. The broke Josh is exasperated but it does him no good. The sheriff suggests he go after Dawson instead. Tom heads home where his father Doc Adams tells him he paid Dawson $1000 to say he committed the robbery and the $500 found at his place. It has nearly bankrupted the Dr. Upon hearing the news, Tom asks for his gun and heads out. The reluctant Josh has no choice so he heads for Dawson's broken down farm to talk to his wife Nora who denies knowing where Zack is or that he is guilty. While resting at a camp, Josh hears a noise which turns out to be Tom Adams who offers Josh $100 to let him go along. Josh agrees but he soon learns Tom's real reason for joining him.

The Medicine Man

Josh is headed for town when he spots an old friend known as Doc filling his bottles of tonic for sale. Josh stops to chat and then heads on in to town. As he prepares to enter the hotel a young man rushes out nearly knocking him down. After getting cleaned up and changing clothes he plans to rest and play some cards at the saloon but before he can get a seat Doc enters asking to talk to Josh in private. He takes Josh to his wagon where he reveals Jim Lansing hiding in his wagon. He is the man suspected in the robbery who is from the east so he has no friends in the town. Doc asks Josh for his help to clear Jim as Doc believes Jim to be innocent. Josh refuses and leaves. Upon returning to his hotel room, he finds Ann Barchester sitting in his room. Upon entering her husband Arthur announces himself. He is offering $1000 to find Jim who he believes stole the money. Josh says nothing about Jim while he finds it strange Arthur won't let his wife speak. Josh returns to Doc to find Jim but Jim is gone but others come looking not only for Jim but Josh.

One Mother Too Many

After riding into town, Josh enters a boarding house looking for Beth Morrison who has written to him offering a job. Josh says he is available depending on the job. Her job offer is a business proposal - to marry her. Josh had served under her husband Captain Dave Morrison in the war. She asks the shaken Josh to wait while she leaves the room and returns with her son, Davy. She introduces them and then asks Davy to leave. She explains to Josh that her mother-in-law Irene tried to run Dave's life but he wouldn't let her. Now that he is dead, she wants control of Davy to raise him as she wanted to do with her son Dave. She has followed Beth everywhere forcing her to lose jobs and making it impossible to raise Davy. She has a large family fortune that Davy would inherit. As they talk, Beth spots Irene ride up with a driver and hired guard. Upon entering she serves Beth with a court order giving her custody. They allow Davy to be taken but Josh has a new job - return Beth's son.

The Choice

Josh enters the Jessup Corners Hotel looking for Jane Koster, an old friend, who wrote to him. She gives him an envelope full of cash asking Josh to go after her husband of 25 years, Frank, who is a bounty hunter. Frank has left to go after the outlaw Stacy Lenz who recently shot Frank in the leg which has not fully healed. Jane wants Frank to give up the business to settle down as they are always on the move and he is getting older and slower. After hearing her story she tells Josh the direction he left and the nester's barn where he may be resting. Josh leaves the money but takes the bullet removed from Frank's leg to go after Frank. He catches Frank sleeping in the barn but has no luck in trying to talk Frank out of the hunt even when Josh proves Frank's thinking is slowing down. Both make their way to Lenz's girlfriend Martha Towers' house. She tells Frank where Lenz is hiding but in reality he is in the next room setting Frank up. Josh finds Towers less friendly but she tells him the same info letting him go after Frank.

Three for One

In Center City Deputy Fred Kimball relieves Sheriff Ken Turner but his mind is else where. He had another argument with his girlfriend Kate, a saloon girl. She is not satisfied with his job as deputy for them to marry. Ken tells Fred that Josh will bed his prisoner Tom Fellows overnight. As the Sheriff leaves, he hears a man in distress but it is Lafe Martin kidnapping him. After Josh jails Tom, an attractive woman stops him. The woman, Jennifer, the wife of Tom has been trailing the two of them. She wants to ride with them to be with her husband at his trial but Josh refuses. The next morning as Josh arrives to get his prisoner Ben Farrell, local banker, rushes in wanting to see the sheriff. His son and another boy are missing as is the sheriff who is late. As he leaves he sees the Sheriff's horse arrive with a note that Farrell reads. The sheriff and the two boys are being held until Tom Fellows is released. One will be killed each day. The deputy gets up a posse but his girlfriend Kate has a different idea for him.

Witch Woman

Josh rides into a small Mexican village during siesta time. As he drinks at the water fountain, a man approaches him which causes Josh to draw his gun. The man is Rafael Guerra who has asked Josh to come for a job paying 500 pesos. Rafael takes Josh to his house outside of town where he explains the situation. He is the school teacher and his pregnant wife is about to deliver. Mexican villages have a La Curandera or healing woman who everyone believes in but him. She has decorated the front of his house but Rafael wants her nowhere near his wife. He is willing to pay Josh to keep her away. The midwife Esperanza runs out saying it is time to get La Curandera. Rafael tries to stop her but she leaves. As time draws close for the birth, Rafael sends Josh for the midwife after Josh gives him a small 4 shot derringer. In town Rafael's father-in-law's henchmen decide to take Josh back to the border and that night the village takes La Curandera to the house.

Baa-Baa

Josh is asked by George Goode to meet him at his home for a job. His wife had a pet ewe named Baa-Baa on whom she doted to the exclusion of him. Fed up, he took the ewe to a remote location and left her. His wife now dressed in black won't have anything to do with him. He is willing to pay a high sum to get the pet ewe back but Josh wants nothing to do with the job. However, when George tells his wife Helen that Josh is taking the job, Josh finds it hard to turn down - especially when George gives Josh a huge down payment. The only clues they can give Josh besides the location where Baa-Baa was left is a picture of her with them and the fact she wore a gold bell. Josh starts searching finding a shepherd with a few sheep followed by a confrontation at gunpoint when he tells a cattleman he is looking for a sheep. The man refuses to listen to him. He returns to the shepherd who it turns out has 400 sheep but Josh strikes out. In town his girlfriend Hazel won't talk to him and he is the butt of many jokes until Pedro shows him a gold bell he found.

The Last Retreat

Josh rides into a town looking for Jim Lawton, Attorney at Law. He has been summoned with a telegram saying there is a job for him that pays $500. Jim explains to Josh that he and his wife happened by the bank when it was being robbed by Clem Robinson. After Robinson was captured, Jim's wife identified him at his trial. Robinson, who has escaped, vowed to get even with her. Jim further explains that he is and has always been a coward. He has never carried a gun so he is powerless to protect his wife. This is further proven when they leave his office and Jim accidentally knocks Tom Jenks' hat off. Tom tries to provoke Jim into a fight until Josh defuses the issue. They have agreed to say to Jim's wife Sarah that Josh is an old friend who has come to visit. After dinner it becomes apparent Sarah sees through the charade when she says she knows who Josh is. Jim is on edge plus there is tension between him and his wife. Josh sees more in Jim than Jim does. The sheriff arrives with word Robinson was captured but got away after killing a deputy.

Bounty on Josh

Josh rides down a deserted street into the town of Holbrook on a cold windy night. After entering the hotel, he rings for the clerk before going to the stove to warm himself. The clerk from another room says they are full but Josh asks what room George Newcomb is in to which the clerk Ferris replies, "Room nine." Josh goes upstairs to the room and knocks. No one answers but suddenly he is shot and passes out in the floor. When he awakes, he is in the room of Carol Frazer who has Sheriff Willis with her. He asks Josh who shot him but Josh has no idea. Willis tells Josh he won't put up with trouble in town. He tells him to go see the doctor and leave town. Josh makes his way to the doctor who patches him up but he is unable to use his sidearm. He goes to his horse where he gets his derringer. He tries to get a drink at the saloon but the bartender refuses to serve him and he closes the saloon. Carol earlier made him an offer to return to her room so he does where things start to come together.

Episode 18

Hero in the Dust

Twin brothers Pete and Harry Weaver are breaking camp when Harry breaks the news to Pete that he is going his own way. Pete tries to tell Harry they must stick together but when Harry stays firm, Pete knocks him out and runs off his horse. Later, in his hotel room Josh hears a knock on his door. He opens it with his hand on his gun as Harry Weaver steps in. After finding no weapons on Harry, Josh listens to Harry's job offer. He hands Josh a poster that states Pete Weaver is wanted for $500 with a picture that matches Harry's face. Josh asks if Harry wants him to turn him in but Harry explains Pete is his twin brother. He produces his own birth certificate which shows him as Harry and not Pete. Harry is worried a bounty hunter or lawman will mistake him for Pete plus he believes Josh will bring Pete in alive. He offers Josh $106 for the job. Josh accepts the offer so the two head for where Harry thinks Pete may be. A rain storm forces them into a barn for cover where fellow bounty hunter Phil Richards arrives with a hungry look.

Epitaph

Josh is called to Border City by the new Sheriff, Walt Sommers. Josh arrives expecting to meet his friend Sheriff Jim Kramer but Walt informs him that his quarry is Jim Kramer with a $300 bounty on his head for bank robbery. There is another $300 for returning the stolen money. Walt explains that a woman Martha Boyd came in on the stage. Everyone could tell she was bad news but Jim. Josh talks to the local bartender Karl next who says he can't explain Jim's actions. Josh heads into high country after Jim but bounty hunter Hoyt Larson finds him first. Feeling Jim mistreated him in the past Hoyt begins by taunting Jim who catches Hoyt off guard, knocks him out and escapes. He continues on camping that night when Josh walks into his camp. He takes Jim's gun but otherwise trusts Jim. Jim explains that he met Martha outside town where she had a friend Larry with her. They took the money and now Jim is trying to track them down to recover the money to return it. Josh wants to return but when Larry fires at them in an ambush he decides otherwise.

The Voice of Silence

Josh rides up to the home of Frank Hagen who has written to him about a job that pays $100 which he needs. When he yells to see if anyone is home, he sees a girl inside and a man approaches with a rifle telling him to raise his hands. Josh tells him he is looking for a Frank Hagen. After showing his letter, the man tells Josh he is Hagen. When Josh asks about the details of the job, Hagen tells him he is to guard his deaf and mute daughter keeping everyone off the ranch until he returns that evening or the next day. Needing the pay, Josh agrees to take the job but he feels a bit uncomfortable about it. Hagan leaves as Josh realizes he can't converse with the daughter Carol who does write him notes as well as write in her own diary. Eventually she writes to Josh that she may be bad company but she is a good cook. Josh has noticed her looking at him when he was outside realizing she may have a bit of a crush. Josh has to run off a drifter but when Hagen returns shot Josh learns the rest of the job.

El Gato

After taking 76 days to arrive from New York, Archie Warner drives his horse and wagon to the Border City Hotel. Josh checking out of the hotel, jostles with Archie as he leaves. Archie asks the clerk for Josh who tells him Josh just walked by him. Upon hearing this Archie runs outside to stop Josh who is preparing to ride away. Archie offers Josh $300 to introduce him to Josh's friend in Mexico, El Gato. El Gato is a bandit in Mexico with a small army who likes Josh and has a comical side. Josh finds the offer strange but when Archie says he wants to shoot El Gato to become famous, Josh turns him down. Archie raises the offer to $400 but Josh tells him he is crazy plus he likes El Gato. Realizing Josh misunderstood him, Archie goes to his wagon for his camera to explain he wants to photograph El Gato. Josh immediately changes his mind telling Archie to mount up. They must get past the Federales to reach El Gato. El Gato having never heard of photographs is at first leery but he comes to decide Archie should stay with him - against Archie's wishes.

Detour

Josh is eating in Jack's Café when he notices a short man peeking into the window at him. The waitress tells Josh a fresh pie has come out of the oven but when Josh asks how much he owes already, he decides he can't afford it even though he could devour it. At that moment the man enters, offers Josh coffee and a job for $100. Josh orders the coffee and apple pie. The man, Clayton Armstrong, explains that he needs Josh's help to elope with his girlfriend, Jane Fairweather. When Josh comments Clayton only needs a ladder, Clayton states he is afraid of heights. He offers Josh $50 now and $50 when done which the broke Josh gladly accepts. Jane's father, Martin, has two interests - Jane's cooking and his white horse Prince. When Josh reaches the window while on the ladder, he is met by Martin with a rifle. He and Clayton escape via the surrey they came in. Josh is forced to use Martin's weakness - his horse Prince - to steal his daughter away - but he gets the wrong one.

Monday Morning

On a Saturday night Charlie Glover and Porter Fairchild are preparing to close the Traceyville Express Office when Porter invites Charlie to his home for a roast Mrs. Fairchild has cooked. Charlie turns down the offer saying he has an engagement in a nearby town apparently with a young woman. He wants to finish up some bookkeeping details before he leaves so Mr. Fairchild leaves him to his work. Once Mr. Fairchild leaves, Charlie pulls $10,000 from the safe into a carpet bag. The next morning after a knock on Josh's hotel room door, Charlie enters. He tells Josh he would like to hire him for $200 to accompany him to Traceyville. The request seems too simple to Josh so further questioning reveals that Charlie stole $10,000 which causes Josh to push him out of his room. Charlie re-enters stating that he wants to return the money before it is found missing Monday morning. The catch is that he had an accomplice but he doesn't know where he is. Josh takes the job but the accomplice Sam turns up with another partner wanting their money.

The Long Search

Josh is in the Broken Wheel Saloon buying a bottle of whiskey for him and his girlfriend, Kitty, who is irritated with Josh. Josh returned late from Placer City for a date with Kitty. As Josh tries to smooth over the situation with Kitty, the bartender interrupts them to whisper to Josh that he has a visitor - a beautiful Japanese woman in a traditional kimono. As Kitty storms off irate again, the woman introduces herself as Yoshika Nakamura. She was asked in Japan by a man, Bill Timmons, to marry her but he left she assumes to return to his home at Placer City. She has been to Placer City but no one will tell her where Timmons is. She wants to hire Josh to find him. Josh tries to back out saying he hunts wanted men. Her reply - she wants Timmons. Josh decides to take her to Placer City hoping he will have better luck. On the way he learns various facets about her life, training, and ceremonies. In Placer City he learns someone is also looking for her - from Japan.

Dead Reckoning

Josh arriving in town rides up to Sheriff Art Hampton's office where Art is nailing up a wanted poster. Seeing Josh, Art responds that he was thinking of Josh then. Josh says that is no surprise as he arrived from Colfax based on a message from Art about a Paul Decker. The surprised Art tells Josh he didn't send the message but to look at the poster he was nailing up. It is for Paul Decker wanted dead or alive for murder with a reward of $300. Josh decides to go after Decker but before he can leave, a woman calls to him. She clears up the details by saying she sent the message to Josh and that she is Mrs. Decker. She has heard Josh will bring in wanted men alive so she wants him to catch her husband so he can return to prove his innocence. She tells Josh where to find Decker. He rides there via Mesa City where he runs into the Taggart brothers at the general store who want to hang Decker for killing their brother regardless of whether he is innocent. Josh's attempt to lose them fails putting him and Decker in peril.

Barney's Bounty

David Durant is in the Cantina in a showdown with a man at the bar. David is obviously scared as the man calls for another drink before he handles David. David's father Barney with a rope around his shoulder enters. He walks to the bar ordering a beer in a stern voice. As the man finishes his drink, Barney hits him with the rope and smashes his gun hand with his beer glass. He tells the man David is his son and walks out taking David's gun. At home he tells "Davy" it is time for him to leave home to create his own life or he is going to be killed. As David walks to the stage, Josh rides past him pulling two prisoners on foot. He wants to rent horses from Barney for the prisoners he is taking to Nevada. While he and Barney prepare the horses, the men cut the rope holding them. They start a fire in the barn locking Josh and Barney in it and escape with two of Barney's horses. After extinguishing the fire, Josh goes after them followed by Barney. He passes David telling him to return home to tend to it until he returns. On the trail they discuss Davy.
