The small town Ystad in Sweden is suddenly struck by could-be terrorist attacks after the townhouse has an art controversial exhibition that is religious in nature. The army, secret service and politicians interfere with police work, but the police must find out who is blowing things up in Ystad and murdering local citizens?

Six-year-old Albin Landberg goes missing from nursery school and his corpse is later found in the sea,pumped full of sedatives. Martinsson is convinced the culprit is recently-released paedophile Greger Frankman and is innocently responsible for a vigilante parent group locating and stoning Frankman's house, accidentally killing his elderly mother. Wallander is more interested in nursery helper Rebecka,who goes on the run following the news,but she was only going to meet another man behind her boyfriend's back.Discovering that Albin's older,adoptive brother Viktor was hyperactive and given the same tablets discovered in Albin's corpse by his father brings the investigation tragically closer to home for its solution.

Drug-running biker Erik Strah is found on a beach, his neck broken and the drugs gone - to the fury of vicious drugs baron Jovan Brankovic who runs the racket under cover of the Bloodhounds, the Ystad motor cyclists' group. Another member,Hans Kolt, gets a visit from officers Svartman and Isabelle about suspected dog fights. Svartman is attacked by a dog and Isabelle is later confronted in her flat by a masked man warning her from giving evidence. She wants to quit the force but Public Prosecutor Katarina gets Wallander to persuade her to stay. Looking for his senile old mother,who has gone walkabout from her care home, pathologist Nyberg accidentally stumbles on a disused church where the drugs gang meets. When another young biker, Johannes, is intimidated into taking over from Erik,Wallander and his team are in a position to follow him, raid the church and catch the villains.

Disgruntled residents on an estate which is frequently burgled form their own posse and nab a burglar, Polish immigrant Jarek Kozyra, who one of them,Olle,beats up and leaves for dead in the woods, torching his car. When Jarek's wife reports him missing she gives Wallander his mobile phone, on which he finds a picture of a dead woman, taken in a house Jarek robbed. Is she perhaps Olle's wife, supposedly staying with her mother but actually missing herself. As Wallander bonds with Katarina's son over a game of football, soccer holds the answer to the case.

After attending a concert by Russian cellist Irina Konsalevska Wallander saves her life when she is the victim of a car bomb. She recovers in hospital where another attempt is made to kill her. Wallander finds out she is to give evidence against hit-man Yuri Rina,who shot dead her boyfriend Mischa and that the Russian Mafia are out to silence her. Mischa smuggled drugs in her cello case unbeknown to her but forensics reveal an unexpected link between victim and killer,giving the reason for the murder as personal. Irina is moved to a houseboat where she proves her worth in a gun battle between the police and her pursuers.

Priest Henrik Nordstrom is shot outside a hostel which he has been using to have sex with his lover Lotta, wife of Peter Unell. Unell is managing director of a firm Prominent Care,which exports hospital apparatus to Africa and the priest was involved with it. Henrik's pious wife Asa was aware of her husband's affair. Lotta tells Wallander she was about to leave her insensitive husband for the priest and candid photos of her with Nordstrom are found,along with the murder weapon in Peter Unell's house. As he stands trial for murder Wallander is convinced he has been framed and sets out to prove it.

Episode 7

The seemingly random murder of a jogger in woodland and the detonation of car bombs in central Ystad are but diversions to busy the police whilst a security van is robbed of 15 million kroner. Isabelle and Portus witness this and give chase but are attacked by the criminals and hospitalized. Given the security firm's meticulous contingency plan Wallander suspects a leak from the inside and aims for Micke Sterner,a compulsive gambler and the only staff member to know the encoded transit schedules. But some private sleuthing by over-worked Svartman,who has found the robbers' den, and Wallander's suspicions of an ex-cop turned security officer with connections to the firm provide the real break-through.

Episode 8

A suspected jewel robber, his ex-girl-friend and a cop who became more than friends with her are all killed by a sniper, who turns out to be a sixteen-year-old boy. It is assumed that he is carrying out the murders to impress gang leader Kali Manchetta and become one of his gang but he has a more personal reason. Pontus risks his life in pursuit of the murderer for which he is initially rebuked by Wallander for not being a team player and endangering his colleagues though Wallander comes to see the young man's bravery. Pontus also holds out against his estranged father who has come to persuade him to join the family law firm,using Pontus's illegitimate son as the lure. Pontus resists but for the first time begins to bond with the child.

Episode 9

Miranda, a stroppy teenager of Iraqi parentage is abducted and dies after rowing with the choir-mistress and Bea,another chorister. Wallander pulls in ex-racist skinhead Johan, the boy Miranda stole from Bea and then dropped, but has to release him. When Lina, another choir member vanishes, the trail leads to Thomas Hammar,a recluse,seemingly obsessed with the choir, but his motives for following them are personal and innocent. The real culprit is much nearer home.

Episode 10

An adulterous couple, Nina Adler and Martin Rittner,are blown up in a beach-house explosion and foul play is suspected. Peter,Nina's husband and Martin's business partner, is a thuggish,dodgy sort but Rittner's wife gives him an alibi. A tramp,subject to memory losses,known to be in the area at the time of the murders,who participated in scams for Adler and Rittner, is also killed but again Adler has an alibi. Wallander learns that the key to the murders lies in a particularly despicable business fraud and a man out for terrible revenge for deeply personal reasons.

Episode 11

When Manfred Stjarne is stabbed to death outside the Brada cider factory his wife Claire has inherited - suspicion falls on Polish worker Jan Kowalski, with whose wife Manfred was having an affair, but Jan is found hanged - later evidence suggesting foul play. Benjamin Wilkes, an ex-psychologist who helped Manfred select redundancy candidates, is killed in the same way as Manfred, putting disgruntled ex-Brada employees in the frame, but a third slaying implicates a former patient of Wilkes, who has connections to the Stjarne family. A newly loved-up Isabelle and Pontius start to fool around whilst on surveillance, taking their eye off the ball and allowing this suspect to confront Claire.

Isabelle and Pontus pass out as police officers but he is dismayed when she says she wants to put their affair on hold in order to travel.Her plans are cut short when she joins the investigation into the death of her friend from the gym,Therese,murdered by burglars. Therese's loser ex-boyfriend Fabian is in debt to very heavy people and offers them her jewels but is he the killer? Violent boxer and ex-con Patrik Lippowski,a former lover of Isabelle,who fled from him and changed her name from Rebecka to Isabelle to escape him,is another suspect,but he is murdered with Isabelle's gun. In finding the killer Pontus's love for Isabelle is put to the test whilst Wallander advises Katarina when her bitchy teen-aged daughter starts stealing.

Corrupt businessman Filip Pasolic stands trial for bringing illegal workers into Sweden and using them as slave labour. Wallander is injured by a car bomb intended for Katarina, who is prosecuting Pasolic and she is given police protection. At the same time pressure on the illegal Lithuanian work force to re-build Ystad's recycling centre in time for it to get an E.U. grant results in two men being killed,one of whose little sister, Natalia,sees construction manager Zoran bury the corpses. She goes to the police and implicates Zoran but takes off again with Zoran in pursuit. Wallander can link Zoran to Pasilic and needs to find him before he gets to Natalia in order to strong-arm him into testifying against Passilic. He also has to dissuade Katarina from resigning as,due to witness intimidation,the case is going against her.
