Texas Ranger Cordell Walker returns to Austin after being on an assignment in deep cover. Still mourning his murdered wife Emily, he gets drunk instead of going home, ending up being driven there by patrol cop Micki Ramirez. Cordell's family is conflicted to see him - his son August is happy, but his daughter Stella is hostile, feeling abandoned by him. Worried and a little upset that he chose to get drunk, Cordell's parents Bonham and Abilene convince him to move closer to home to give the kids more stability. Cordell's brother Liam also lectures him about his kids, since he and his boyfriend Ben have been operating as their parents in loci. At work, Cordell discovers that his former partner Larry is now his boss, and recruit Micki is his new partner. Micki herself is also having issues with her family, who are uncomfortable with her job as a Ranger, since they have a bad record of racism. The two begin to bond as they investigate a robbery that turns out to be connected to a drug cartel. Micki's reactions to his behavior makes Cordell start to see that the way he constantly disregards the rules is a privilege that doesn't extend to Micki or Larry, and starts to re-examine his behavior. After the case is solved, Cordell is faced with a hard decision - join an exciting drug task force that will let him keep running away from the memories of his wife's death, or turn it down and stay in Austin, where he can try to rebuild his relationship with his kids and let himself finally mourn his wife.

Yet Cordell's greatest worry is August, who believes he wants to desert the family again and nearly spoils the undercover operation, and can only learn the truth after arresting the fiends.

Trevor, August and coach Trey escort Stella's soccer team to a match with kinky side-games in the middle of nowhere, but the fun turns less innocent when a North Nation thugs band arrives to collect 'field lease'. This triggers Trevor's heroic potential, earning grateful respect from Cordell, who came to the rescue just in time, still ignoring Trevor visits his father Clint West in prison.

Cordell is otherwise occupied anyway, having heard of an approaching tornado, just while August -who proves a surprisingly good buddy for 'orphaned' immigrants daughter Ruby- and Stella are at the school dance with Trevor and other mates.

Clint West and his criminal gang, plus confused but loyal son Trevor, who feels his mother must be avenged, have taken over the Walker ranch and hold the family plus Hoyt at gun point. Liam is shot and left for dead, till pa Bonham arrives, finds and patches up his son, but before he can call for help both are apprehended by Clint, who even finds out and informs the family about Bonham's candid cancer. The kids get permission to nurse Liam, but find his badly bleeding wound too daunting, so beg Trevor till he allows them to call Trey, who instructs them how to remove the bullet and cauterize. Clint forces Cordell and Hoyt to commit a bank hold-up and informs the police, but Hoyt smartly takes all the blame and Cordell convinces Micki to let them handle vindictive Clint. Bringing the cash is no way out, a gun fight results, in which Hoyt gets killed but Trevor realizes the hard truth and helps overpower his evil father.

Hoyt heroically helped save the walker family, but died in Cordell's arms and left a surprisingly nice estate to his buddy. So the young Walkers -except recovering Liam- and his beloved Geri Broussard make it a commemorative trip down memory lane to visit the land he planned to start ranch on with her. They find horses and a lama, which the kids are eager to take all to the ranch, but Cordell decides to leave the odd draft animal behind, only to reconsider and bring it back, surprised grandpa already prepared a stable and spots it's actually an alpaca. Meanwhile Micki teams up with Trey and captain James to locate fellow veteran Lou Kirk, reported atypically missing by his wife, desperate to prevent foreclosure by the bank as clandestine cage fighter, despite major medical objections, calling for a last minute switch.

Miki and Trey face his choice to study psychology, not surgery, and his bossy mother Keesha Barnett, who expects grandchildren. Bonham and Abeline accepted Stan's offer to host in his fancy mansion their wedding vow renewal, all ignoring Cordell would be after him triggering an armed confrontation.
