Harry's client insists he drive her to the airport. The car breaks down and they have to stay at a motel, however there is only one room left. Harry gives the room to his client and he sleeps in the car. The manager of the motel checks up on Harry in the middle of the night to make sure he is sleeping in the car and didn't sneak into the room, therefore paying for a single but having two people sleep in it. When Harry gets home the next morning Irma, Chet and Alice don't believe him until he takes Irma to the motel to prove his innocence.

Harry wins the Man of the Year award from his lodge and everyone is excited with the exception of, of course, Chet and Alice. When Harry puts his foot down and demands they attend, the two oldest Boyle children say they will if they can get new outfits. Unfortunately, their taste in clothes leaves much to be desired. First, Chet comes home in a wild outfit and without the haircut Harry demanded. However, the biggest shock comes from Alice, who comes home with a dress with a see through top and informs her father that she will wear it and without a bra. Now Harry must try to convince his little girl how foolish she will look.

Chet brings home his new hippie friend, Claude, who moves in and criticizes Harry for not caring about the environment, being a capitalist, etc. Harry tries to prove that every so-called hippie is a capitalist by offering him a job at his plant, but Claude ends up leading the workers in a guitar session. Next Harry tries pretending to be a hippie himself, hoping the boys will worry where their next meal is coming from. Ralph overreacts and builds a wall between his house and Harry's, drawing a TV camera crew. A TV sponsor solves Harry's problem when he hears Claude playing his guitar and singing and offers him a contract writing commercial jingles. Chet is disillusioned when his friend becomes a "sell-out".

The Boyles rent out a beach house for two weeks during the summer. Unfortunately, Harry can't really enjoy it. For one thing, he still has to commute back and forth to work in order to pay for the "vacation". However, the thing that really puts a kink in the vacation is a young man and his two female friends who decide to use the beach to do a little nude sunbathing. Eventually, it escalates into an argument between Harry and his two oldest kids, Chet and Alice, over individual rights. Also complicating matters are Ralph and his vigilantes who turn the area into a beachhead complete with tank traps and barbed wire because Ralph fears that nude sunbathing is the first step in a communist invasion. Will Harry finally have a peaceful vacation?

Fed up with Chet's mooching, Harry decides to put his foot down and decides to charge him not only rent, but also for his food. This finally forces Chet to finally go to work. However, the only job he can find is in a head shop. He even comes up with an invention to sell at the shop; a light-bulb that looks like a candle, which Harry thinks is a stupid idea. However, when the candle becomes a huge success he sees that his oldest son could finally be getting the message that money isn't exactly the root of all evil.

Chet announces that he finally has met "the one" and announces that he intends to spend the rest of his life with her. However, Harry and Irma are shocked when they find out that spending the rest of his life with the girl doesn't necessarily mean getting married when he tells him that he will be living with her and that he still won't go to work, but will live off the system.

However, this doesn't sit well with Irma and Alice who are both deathly afraid of it. Harry, behind Irma's back, tells Jamie he can keep it as long as it stays in the garage. Unfortunately, when the mouse turns up missing, Jamie blames Harry and decides to run away from home.

However, Harry's anger at his son turns to concern as Chet gets his draft notice. Chet then shocks his father by announcing that he will avoid the draft by escaping to Canada. Now Harry must try to not only try to delay Chet's induction, but try to keep him out of prison for draft evasion.

While he is both excited and terrified about the prospect that he is about to become a father again in his mid 40's, everyone else seems to be against the idea. However, he is most horrified by Chet and Alice's reaction as they don't want to see a new baby arrive in an already overcrowded world.

Now he must clear his name before Ralph and his vigilantes put him in front of a firing squad.
