Episode #1.1

Sun, Jun 20, 202159 mins

Perhaps with the exception of his sister Karen who set them up unofficially, Douglas and Connie were never obvious as a couple on the surface as the practical biochemist and the free-spirited artist, respectively. Regardless, Douglas is caught off guard when Connie announces that she believes their marriage has taken its course after they having been together for twenty-four years in that they no longer communicate with each other in a meaningful way. Still, she suggests that they proceed with their long planned three-week trip to the continent, their last blow-out as a family before Albie heads off to art college in the fall on the assumption that he is accepted, she believing it a good opportunity for father and son to connect which they don't now do in Albie being more like her. Initially retreating into his comfort zone of figuring "what's the point", Douglas changes his mind largely in believing that it gives him three weeks to change Connie's mind about the end of their marriage, his strategy to change into what she wants which may be easier for him to say than to do. While Connie is one aspect, he may not realize that that connection with Albie is just as important in how she views him within their marriage.

Episode #1.2

In Paris, nothing changed between Douglas and either Connie, who doesn't know his grand plan to win her back, or Albie, in their different outward agendas for the trip itself and Douglas not being able to find that point of connection with Albie, especially as Douglas is having difficulty going outside of his comfort zone in wanting solely to be the typical tourist. The dynamic may have even gotten worse. Regardless, Douglas and Connie have made the mutual decision for the family to continue to their next planned stop: Amsterdam. It doesn't help the situation with the surprise that Albie springs on them shortly after their arrival that may make the divergence between Douglas' planned "guide book" versus Albie's wanted "party city" experiences in Amsterdam more pointed. While Douglas tries to break out of that comfort zone, an incident brings him back in and may forever alter his relationship directly with Albie and indirectly with Connie.

After a day in Venice with only tourist clothes on his back and two feetful of blisters from all the walking to show for it, Douglas seems no closer to locating Albie despite his methodical search, the tourist area not being large, and knowing that Albie is indeed in the city. The one person he does seem to encounter constantly is Freja. What starts as the two being new friends turns into each bonding with the other in their common loneliness, much like Douglas and Connie having the loss of Jane being the first thing they having in common and thus bonding over that situation early in their marriage. And back in Britain, Connie can only imagine what is happening in Douglas largely being incommunicado as she forwards what she has been able to discover about Albie's whereabouts via the Internet.

Episode #1.4

Without Albie knowing he was coming, Douglas is finally able to catch up with him in Barcelona, Albie who is not too happy to see his father in expecting Kat and expecting specific news about being an imminent father for which he was bracing himself. While they are able to bring up some issues that have been wedges between them for the better part of their lives, certain other issues come to light that weren't truly surprises but that may help them come to new terms in their relationship. But arguably the biggest issue is one where Albie is forced to take the lead and that will extend their stay on the continent for another couple of weeks, an extra two weeks for Douglas to bridge the gaps between both him and Albie and him and Connie before it's too late.
