Ramses' Buried Treasures

Tue, Dec 4, 2018

Reigning Egypt for half a century, Pharaoh Ramses II set out to earn his epithet the Great, even be remembered as the greatest king ever. He's immortal because of the unequaled legacy of monuments he built all over the empire. Particularly impressive is the double temple complex he had carved out of the rock in deep-southern Abu Simbel. Unprecedented, he ordered statues of himself the size of the gods, promoting himself from divine son to their peer. Yet his spouse got to be represented his size, even has her own temple, as her royal and divine blood was the legitimization for his new dynasty of common stock. The depiction of the battle of Kadesh against the Hettite invaders in Syria starring him as foes-smiting general in chief is a historical fake of an actual draw, but representative of his propaganda talent. The huge granary in his other main temple, at Luxor, was a treasury for his new administrators school, recruiting staff for the megalomaniac monumental program building prestige from Egypt and himself as its embodiment.
