Episode 1

Aussie Bob & Kiwi Terry

43 mins

Australia in the 1970s. The crime scene is on the move. Forget armed robbery and marijuana. Australia is about to embrace the hard stuff - heroin. Leading the charge are two men in New South Wales: Aussie Bob Trimbole, from the town of Griffith, and Kiwi Terry Clark, a Sydney-based charmer with a twinkle in his eye and a big dream. Down Melbourne way, the crime world is yet to catch up. The crims in that city are led by brothers Brian and Les Kane, hard men from the notorious Painters and Dockers trade union. The Kane brothers are old-school crims who don't realise that times are changing. They're more concerned with protecting their own turf than branching out. One man who does understand the changing times is furniture shop owner and NSW political candidate Don Mackay. Mackay has spent much energy trying to clean up his home town of Griffith, NSW and is beginning to make inroads, much to the chagrin of Trimbole and his mates. If Trimbole's venture into the drug trade is ever going to work, Mackay has to be taken out of the picture. So Trimbole makes sure of it. And he makes sure his corrupt friends in the NSW police are sympathetic to his situation. In so doing, he changes the course of Australian history.

Diamonds

44 mins

With Terry relocated to the UK, Allison is determined to get on with the Australian end of the business; crushing heroin, recruiting couriers and fending off increasingly desperate sensations of loneliness and isolation. But when a new courier is caught carrying a large amount of heroin into Australia, Allison is faced with a terrifying new challenge. The Federal Narcotics Bureau boys, led by Agent Jack Smith, are on her tail and prepared to play nasty. Smith pushes an already badly shaken Allison almost to the edge. Meanwhile, George Freeman is unimpressed when his cop 'mates' shut down all nine of his illegal casinos in order to regain some credibility with the public. But a certain someone is also unimpressed with George Freeman. Perhaps because Freeman took his plumber Michael Hurley's wife Natalie into his home while Hurley was in The Philippines. Or perhaps because Freeman rigged a horse race without telling anyone. Whatever the reason, Freeman ends up with a bullet in the head - and it hurts like hell.

Terry's plan to get rid of his business partner, Marty Johnstone backfires when his butchered remains are discovered in the UK. Under intense questioning, Marty's best mate Andy Maher confesses his role in the murder and implicates Terry Clark. The police swoop on Terry's London home and arrest him. Dave Priest is hopeful Terry's imprisonment will help blow the lid on their investigation into the heroin trade and systemic police corruption. His colleague Joe Messina is itching to question Clark about the murder of Doug and Isabel Wilson - the drug couriers whose corpses wrenched open this can of worms. To help apply pressure on Terry and co, the Feds use their FBI contacts to have Allison Dine arrested in the U.S. The Feds want to questions her about the Mr Asia syndicate. The Brotherhood

44 mins

Things are returning to normal for George Freeman; he survived a shooting, his casinos are back in operation and his fiancée - the well-bred, incandescent Georgina - is the blonde icing on the cake. Down in Melbourne, the Coronial inquest into the Wilsons' deaths kicks off. Bob Trimbole and Brian Alexander both avoid testifying on the grounds of avoiding self-incrimination, but lawyer John Aston - whose legal practicing certificate is contingent on him being of good character - can't weasel out that easy. Still recovering from her humiliation during her previous experience as a crown witness, Allison testifies with trepidation. But this time her credibility is not questioned and her testimony is accepted. It's a huge win for Joe Messina and the Feds. Not only does the Coroner believe Allison's shocking evidence, he recommends a Royal Commission into the Mr Asia drug syndicate, which would force Bob and Brian to testify or be served with contempt charges. Despite this, Bob thinks he's untouchable and throws a party. But Brian's unpopularity worsens; he's hassling George Freeman, the corrupt NSW police are fearful he'll roll over and testify against them; even Bob Trimbole - who's normally everybody's mate - turns his back on him. Clearly Brian has become a liability, and drastic action needs to be taken against him. Meanwhile, there is conflict within the Joint Task Force over how to deal with Bob Trimbole. Some want to keep him under surveillance while they crack a large drug importation he's involved in, while others are concerned he's a flight risk. But unbeknownst to the Federal Police hierarchy, there is a mole within the Feds who threatens to create havoc with their investigation After receiving a tip off that he's about to be arrested, Bob pegs it to the airport with the Feds close on his tail. The police have issued a passport alert so the odds are high Bob will be stopped at the airport - but Bob's a man who's never been shy to roll the dice.

The Loved Ones

45 mins

Chris "Mr Rent-a-Kill" Flannery is the most dangerous and volatile man in Australia, hands down. His abilities as a hitman are beyond doubt, but his wild ways are starting to make people nervous. In particular, the corrupt NSW detectives are concerned that Chris has become a loose cannon, a destabilising force on the underworld. They call upon crime king George Freeman to keep Chris under control. After using Chris to help take care of some of his own 'loose ends', Freeman takes it upon himself to eradicate Mr Rent-a-Kill - with a little help from his friends. With Terry Clark serving a life sentence for murder in the UK, the Federal Police have shifted their focus to catching Bob Trimbole. Aussie Bob is currently on the run in Europe, battling with life-threatening prostate cancer and trying to keep his various criminal activities bubbling along. He is determined to provide for his family before cancer catches up with him. As part of their strategy to flush out Bob Trimbole, the Feds endeavour to cut off his cash flow, which means tracking Nick Paltos' seven tonne hash shipment. If they nab Paltos, they might extract Trimbole's whereabouts, and pin down the major profit takers who bankrolled the whole deal - including certain elements of the Sydney CIB. But time is running out for Bob Trimbole. Hounded by the Federal Police, tormented by guilt, and trapped in a foreign hospital, Trimbole's life is unravelling fast. There will be no happy ending for Aussie Bob. The Federal Police have much to celebrate. Terry Clark and Bob Trimbole are now off the scene, for good. They have finally solved the murder of Griffith anti-drugs campaigner Donald Mackay, and provided justice for his widow Barbara. They have unmasked the webs of corruption that poison the justice system, particularly in NSW. But the cancer of corruption and organised crime is resilient. And the criminals who profit from it are always looking for new ways to reinvent themselves.
