After Sharon and Johnny's wedding, Berg and Irene end up in bed together. However, they do not want anybody to know and go to extraordinary lengths to keep it secret. Pete and Marti also make plans for a date but, when Pete arrives, he is severely injured when he finds a baby bear there. Sharon and Johnny's marriage is going along as expected, she is a spendthrift and he is frugal. This causes their honeymoon to be curtailed. However, he redeems himself because it turns out that he has bought a run-down home to be Sharon's 'castle'.

Pete finally qualifies as a fireman and loves flashing his new badge. Sharon and Johnny are starting to decorate their home but its 'christening' is taking a while. Unbeknown to Johnny, Sharon organises a house warming party. Berg and Irene are still keeping their affair a secret but it is becoming difficult. Irene reveals that she has no feelings for Berg, which upsets him because he has feelings for her. Ashley is deeply missing Nomar and Pete, in particular, is concerned about her.

Nomar might leave Boston because he is heartbroken over Ashley and she suddenly becomes a pariah. Everybody starts hating her and there is a mob that wants to run her out of town. She's enjoying the attention but manages to get Pete on the mob's hate list as well.

They confront Irene and she provides the solution, but it forces them to make a choice they don't want to make.

Germ is helping some old people home but mainly succeeds in burning down their house. Johnny is being very meticulous with the house's renovations, which means that Sharon is worried that he will never finish the job, so she employs a carpenter, which upsets him and he becomes irrational. So, she employs somebody to do the job, which upsets him and he becomes irrational. Pete wants some displays of affection from Marti while they're at work, but she isn't keen; she wants to break up with him because she has met somebody else.

They become the hit of the club when they start dancing.

Sharon has decided to go back to work and Ashley is helping her, which upsets Johnny. Pete is still pining for Marti but Irene invites him out to dinner at a restaurant, breaking a date with Berg to do so. Berg ends up traveling to the dinner as a third wheel. Johnny and Sharon end up at the same restaurant, and they have Ashley along as their third wheel. Pete upsets Irene and she finally ends their relationship.

There are plenty of problems with the apartment block. Ashley's apartment toilet has sprung leaks which are leaving the boys' bedrooms on the floor below wet. They have considerably difficulty getting a good night's sleep. Berg ends up in with Sharon and Johnny, and Pete ends up in Ashley's apartment.

Ashley's attitude gets her arrested when a police officer pulls her over; at her court case, her approach almost gets her jailed. The group is dining at a restaurant when a diner starts choking on some food; Sharon rushes over and saves him while Pete and Berg just look on making jokes. They are embarrassed when Johnny, who has been taping the incident, gives the tape to a local TV station. This makes Sharon a hero and Pete and Berg pariahs. They try to redeem themselves, but just make things worse.

After six months, Johnny has finally completed the sitting room, but he's used up all the money and none is left for the rest of the house. There is a fire in the house and it is burned down--and Pete suspects that Johnny burned it down for the money. Meanwhile, Berg's mother comes for a short stay after her recent divorce and he's unable to cope with her carefree approach to life--especially when she starts to date again.

Felix is interested in Susan and makes a date with her, but Pete and Susan start to feel attracted to each other. Irene gets jealous of Susan, not realizing that she's Berg's mother. Later, Berg introduces her to his mother, and declares that Irene is who makes him happy. Sharon wants to wants to invest the payout from the fire it on the stock market following a tip from Ashley. Johnny, naturally, is very reluctant but goes ahead secretly, so that Sharon doesn't know, even keeping secret from her that he ended up doubling his money.

Berg and Irene decide to tell Pete that they are an item; Pete and Susan are still together and Susan is particularly happy but Pete doesn't want to tell Berg yet; Johnny buys an expensive thank-you present for Ashley for her stock tip but Sharon thinks it is for her. Berg and Irene have a party, and when all the secrets come out, Ashley looks on with glee.

Now that all the secrets have come out, where does everybody go from here? Pete is at the fire station when Sharon drops by and tells Felix, who likes Susan, the whole story, and Felix is not happy with Pete. Pete wants to go to Albany to be with Susan, but relents and decides that his friendship with Berg is more important. Sharon is offered a job as a pharmaceutical representative, but she doesn't want the job and decides to go to law school. The trouble is, she wants to spend the money that she and Johnny got from the stock tip, and he is not happy.

Pete cuts off the tip of his finger slicing vegetables and Berg tries to get him to hospital; things go wrong with the taxi ride, the finger is left in the taxi, and he struggles to retrieve it. Sharon has trouble getting a job as an assistant in a law firm and is finally offered a position with a small-time lawyer, but she is unhappy and considers him unethical. Ashley uses Johnny as a subject for a psychology paper; he deliberately causes difficulties for her, but she manages to have the last laugh.

For his birthday, Sharon buys Johnny a "Fireman for a Day" voucher. He joins the young children in the fire station and has so much fun that he decides to become a firefighter for real. Sharon is not happy because she is worried that he will be injured or worse. They are taking photographs for the hospital security and Ashley is not happy with the result. A nurse accuses Berg of not being chivalrous when he cuts in and this upsets him, as he thinks that everybody should like him. Ashley stands up for him.

Berg tells Irene that he loves her but doesn't get any reaction and he is upset. He goes to a comic-book signing and meets a girl, Katie, from his old high school. She has changed considerably and he doesn't recognize her. He decides to go on a date with her but she ends up as an outpatient when Berg is on duty. He is tempted, but Irene finally gives him an answer. Pete and Ashley go out separately but end up watching a romantic comedy together. Sharon takes Johnny to a business dinner for a spot of schmoozing and he must act like a silent partner in her law firm.

Katie invites Berg to the launch of a new comic book; Ashley provides him with his conscience. Berg does his best to upset Irene by starting a fight with her, and Pete is upset with him. Berg goes to the launch and it turns out that Katie is the author of the comic book. When they kiss, Berg realizes that Irene is the one he really loves, but she isn't happy when he tells her what he did. Sharon goes on a stakeout to catch a cheating husband; Johnny is unavailable so she takes Pete, who's incompetent but they do get the pictures they need. Sharon thinks that Johnny is being unfaithful but he has a different reason for his strange behavior.

Irene is still upset at Berg for kissing Katie; however, Berg manages to convince her to go to a residency-appointment dinner with him. Ashley needs a man to act as her husband for the same dinner and asks Pete to go with her. She tries to sabotage Irene by buying her an inappropriate dress, but she turns out to be the hit of the party. It is Sharon and Johnny's anniversary and she has everything organized, but since he must stay at the fire station for the night, she sneaks in so they can celebrate.

Pete is drilling the trainees when Johnny saves him from being run over by a fire truck. He is grateful and treats him and Sharon to a night at a luxury hotel. When Pete was facing death, the last person he saw was Ashley, and he takes this as a sign that she is "The One" for him; he tries to make up with her but she spurns his overtures--and then starts dreaming of him. Berg is still pursuing Irene but she takes up with Roger, the mailman.

Pete and Ashley make a date and he has a surprise for her--but she doesn't turn up. Berg is still after Irene, but Roger is intervening and there is a confrontation between them. Roger fights dirty to keep Irene and manages to make Berg look bad. Sharon is worried that she and Johnny are no longer doing things together. When she must serve a subpoena Johnny goes with her, but a vicious dog gets in the way.

Ashley is moving out, and Sharon and Johnny are moving into her flat. Ashley may be pregnant as she is showing some signs but is in denial about it, but the test shows that she is. Johnny is hurt fighting a fire and he is rescued by Pete. In the hospital Sharon takes a pregnancy test, but it comes back negative. Berg thinks Irene may be pregnant because the condoms he used were found to be defective. He devises an elaborate way to find out without her knowing. She turns out not to be pregnant.
