Pete decides to leave because of his feelings towards Sharon and ends up in Paris. He meets a woman on the plane who ends up stealing his money. Now that Pete has left, Ashley is making her mark on the apartment. Sharon returns home to Johnny but acts as though nothing had happened; she's afraid of making a life-long commitment despite loving Johnny. However, she changes her mind and accepts his proposal, an engagement which she calls "in theory."

Pete returns from Paris with a French girlfriend, Colette. However, she doesn't speak English and Pete doesn't speak French, and when he finally gets a translator, he discovers that she is a racist. Berg employs a new boy in the pizza place called Germ and they have generation-gap troubles. When Germ organizes a naked band to play at the pizza place, Berg decides that he has had enough of the place. Sharon finally commits 100% to Johnny and proposes to him--the wedding is on.

Ashley and Berg finally start as interns. Berg is being strongly worked by the resident doctor and feels he is being picked on. It seems that Berg's commitment is being questioned but he is determined to prove her wrong. Helping Johnny with some work, Pete has a few unfortunate accidents and gets worried that Johnny is trying to hurt him because of his past feelings for Sharon, but Pete ends up having the last word.

Pete's work at the employment agency is not going well and he is under pressure to fill a new job vacancy and he recruits Sharon, who has just been complimented on her ability to distort the truth. She doesn't get the job, so Pete intervenes to help her--unsuccessfully. Sharon quits her job but hasn't landed a new one. Ashley's ex-husband turns up at the hospital and Berg has an interesting conversation with him, wanting to know more about their relationship. Meanwhile, a rat is loose in the apartment and Ashley is determined to catch it.

Everyone is about to go to a football game courtesy of Pete when Irene turns up; she has just been released from the hospital and is still a bit unstable. Sharon and Ashley become very competitive and keep changing their outfits until they're late for the game, so they decide to go to a movie instead, but talk of Sharon and Johnny's wedding arrangements causes a big argument. They change their minds and decide to go out to dinner, but nothing goes right and they end up eating takeout in the apartment.

On Halloween, Johnny finds a creepy room in the basement of the apartment building. The room is inhabited by a mad scientist, Ed, who captures Pete and Ashley and swaps their brains. He then does the same thing with Berg and Sharon. Johnny comes down and rescues them but is unable to swap their brains. The confusion causes considerable difficulty in the relationships. Eventually, Johnny decides to try to use the equipment to put each person's brain back into the right person. He succeeds--with one exception.

Sharon surprises Johnny with a marriage-counseling session; it also turns out that they want the same wedding date as another couple. Sharon becomes very competitive to ensure that they get the date and tells a few white lies; Johnny is very upset, doesn't want it on his conscience, and forces her to confess what she has done. Berg finally realizes that he and Ashley are living together, and he is not happy. Ashley thinks the problem is Pete and tries to bribe him, but finds out that Berg is really the problem.

Berg surprises Ashley by taking her to visit his parents, but she doesn't hit it off with his mother initially and he's in the middle. The conflict between Ashley and Berg's mother escalates, but all it does is give his mother more respect for Ashley. However, Berg is unhappy and breaks up with Ashley after the visit. Sharon is unhappy about the intimate side of her life with Johnny, thinking it's a bit boring. She confides in Pete about the problem and he tries to help by giving Johnny some big hints. It turns out that Sharon and Johnny want the same thing but are worried about expressing their feelings to each other.

Berg has just broken up with Ashley but she hasn't moved to a new apartment yet, so he is now sleeping on the couch. It's Thanksgiving and Pete takes pity on Irene and invites her to dinner with the group. Ashley invites a bum, Chet, to dinner as well. By looking at their rubbish, Chet shows amazing wisdom into all their relationships, although not always accurate. He tells Berg that Ashley is pregnant and tells Pete that Irene is a gun nut. However, he has an ulterior motive for his insights. Johnny is worried that Sharon is spending too much money since she lost her job and is living beyond their means. They offer to rent Ashley their spare room to make money.

Pete helps Ashley move up to Johnny and Sharon's apartment, but just as she leaves, Pete's grandfather Charlie moves in. He left his wife but didn't tell her where he was going. Charlie has serious liver damage and hasn't long to live, but hasn't told Pete. Johnny is having a lot of trouble coping with two women in the apartment, particularly concerning privacy matters; he accidentally sees Ashley topless, then surprises her in the shower.

Unable to afford the cost of the apartment, Sharon and Johnny are offered the basement rent-free as long as they are the building superintendents. It's a studio apartment, so Ashley must find somewhere else to live. She decides to rent the apartment with a new roommate, Victor. Sharon finds out that Johnny has a little nest egg which he has been saving for a special project. Irene signs for a parcel that is delivered to Pete, but her room full of cats deters him from collecting it; Ashley gets it for him after he helps her move her furniture.

It's New Year's Eve and Sharon is planning a party complete with karaoke. The recently-broken-up Berg and Ashley try to be civil with each other. At the hospital Berg runs into Robert Goulet, who's not feeling well; he's supposed to be going to perform in Las Vegas, but Berg tells him that he shouldn't fly. When Goulet says he needs to perform, Berg invites him to Sharon's karaoke party, which he is happy to attend. Ashley is dating a new doctor at the hospital and she's upset with Berg when because of him her date must work that night. Needing a date, Pete decides to ask Irene, who accepts.

After Ashley and Berg's brief reconciliation, Ashley is unsure about what to do. The Dan Band sings as they act as the consciences of Ashley and Sharon during this episode. Ashley and Sharon try to play Trivial Pursuit but Ashley just wants to drink and talk about Berg. While drunk, Sharon invites Ashley to her wedding, which causes problems with Berg. Sharon initially tries to deter her from coming to the wedding. The boys go to the laundromat; finding that it has changed a bit, they make it their new hangout. They also have considerable trouble getting the washing done, and Berg and Johnny's behavior gets them kicked out.

Pete sets Berg up on a date with a movie body-double to make Ashley jealous; she retaliates by also going on a date. Johnny injures his knee saving one of Irene's cats. Sharon and Johnny find a secret cupboard that has monitors connected to cameras that are in each of the apartments. They turn into voyeurs, spying on all the occupants. They pursue a plan of interfering, but must be careful how they use the information so that the others don't know what's going on.

Ashley's disposal unit is broken, and when Johnny is fixing it, she inadvertently insults him and he storms off, leaving her to fix it--badly. Sharon wants a very expensive wedding dress but Johnny prefers that she buy a cheaper dress that is on sale. Berg and Pete go with Sharon to buy it, only to find that somebody else wants the same one. She uses underhanded tactics to get the gown.

Sharon organizes a charity bachelor auction for the children's wing and gets Berg and Pete to participate, and Berg takes it particularly seriously. Pete has problems when Irene is the winning bidder and Berg disgraces himself by getting drunk. Sharon and Johnny have a garage sale to get rid of unwanted items, which causes problems when wanted and defective items are sold.

Pete is finding his job as a cosmetic salesman unfulfilling, and so he decides to become a firefighter and starts by volunteering at the local station. On the first day he suffers the usual rookie stirring and is disappointed that he is confined to cleaning duties. Sharon volunteers at the hospital reading to the children. There is a food-poisoning outbreak and all doctors are needed to do extra duty. Sharon is also affected and is admitted to the hospital. Johnny is then worried because wedding arrangements are getting behind. Berg is trying to do too much and sends a patient into shock because he was too tired to do the job properly.

Pete is Ashley's caddy in a golf tournament. As they head to the tournament they are mugged on the underground railway station. They are stranded without money to get home, so Pete gets creative in order to get some. Berg's mistake in an emergency has caused him to lose confidence in his abilities in the hospital. Johnny and Sharon are supposed to be writing their own vows and Sharon is worried that Johnny is not doing his vows properly--but she hasn't written hers either.

Berg, still on probation, is transferred to the morgue where he can't do any more damage. He finds himself very attracted to the funeral-home worker. Johnny ruins a wall in Irene's place and she is forced to spend the night with him and Sharon. She brings her two cats that she wants to breed, which keeps Johnny and Sharon awake. Irene and Sharon hit it off and Johnny becomes upset. A new trainee firefighter, Marti, is determined to outshine Pete, and things become very competitive on training day.

Berg is trying to resurrect the past and returns with Pete and Sharon to the bar that they used when they were in college, but the night deteriorates when Johnny turns up. During a CPR exercise, Marti uses the dummy after Pete without wiping it and Pete reads into it that Marti likes him. He decides to go after her without her knowing.

He lends his key to her so she can use his apartment for a nap; she actually wants to use it for a quickie, and when Sharon also uses the apartment for a charity board meeting, things get complicated. Pete accidentally leaves his makeup samples at the fire station. The fire chief sees what he does and asks him to fix his daughter's makeup, which he does successfully--and discovers that he has a new career.

Shawn appears at Johnny and Sharon's place; she's pregnant and needs a partner for her Lamaze class. Johnny volunteers but Sharon is not entirely happy. Pete has been mopping the floors at the fire station and Marti injures herself when she slips on the wet floor. She goes to the hospital, where she meets Berg, and he asks her out. Pete is not happy about this. Germ is taking his orderly job at the hospital far too seriously and starting to irritate the staff.

Pete and Berg have been fighting about Marti and are talking about splitting up. Pete wants to go to firefighters' boot camp and is disappointed when an acceptance letter doesn't arrive. It turns out it was just misplaced and he is accepted. Pete goes to Marti's and they finally express their feelings for each other. Berg remains on probation and, being upset, goes home to his parents, only to find out that his father had a one-night stand and left his mother. Ashley takes up a petition to get Berg reinstated. Sharon and Johnny are having second thoughts about the wedding. They open up a joint bank account and Sharon makes all the decisions, and Johnny is not happy.

Pete and Berg are still fighting, and Pete and Marti are definitely going out together. Irene sees Pete and Marti kissing and hyperventilates. She deludes herself that Marti must have been a hooker. Sharon canceled the wedding bookings and they are unable to re-schedule after they reconcile. They decide to have a quick wedding, which Irene promises to organize for the next day. Robert Goulet is the wedding celebrant and a Mexican mariachi band supplies la musica. Sharon has some last-minute doubts. Will they have a happy ending?
