In 1973 Rome, John Paul Getty III, the heir and younger member of an oil tycoons' clan, is kidnapped by the Italian mafia in order to get a ransom. On the face of it, his grandfather seems not interested at all in having him back, but he gives his reasons, for better or for worse.

J. Paul Getty, the richest man in the entire world, is in the process of burying his eldest son George, who committed suicide by stabbing himself in the chest with a carving fork. His three remaining sons besmirch him and wonder who will be chosen as the next in line to run their father's vast empire. In walks J. Paul Getty's 16-year-old disheveled grandson John Paul Getty III, who quickly builds up enough nerve to ask his grandfather for a handout of $6,000 to pay off some debts in Rome. His grandfather does not comply so John III is forced to make other arrangements.
