Nurse Cath Hardacre is suspending for telling journalist Sam Kelly about the neglect on her A and E ward. When her friend Ally Sutton, a qualified doctor, leaves for New Zealand Cath assumes her identity and gets a job in a Scottish hospital after her fake credentials impress department head Brigitte Rayne. Karl, her ex, is less happy that she took their little girl Molly with her. Cath's empathetic approach to patients wins over her colleagues, including divorced doctor Andy Brenner and she acquits herself well operating on a car crash victim. Exposure looms, however, when Sam Kelly tracks her down.

Having persuaded Sam - unaware of her new name - to leave her alone, Cath has a problem when she is required to produce her passport for proof of identity, causing her to panic and ask for colleague Charlie's help in an operation. Romance with Andy is a compensation but there is a further obstacle when, returning to Sheffield to visit her elderly father, she learns of Karl's intention to follow her and Molly to Edinburgh. Eventually she manages to procure a fake passport but a meeting with an old friend who knew the real Alison alerts Andy to his lover's deception.

Cath goes back to Sheffield for her father's funeral, leaving Andy, now aware of the truth, in a quandary, though he refrains from telling Brigitte. On Cath's return he takes her away for the weekend and admits he knows who she is, offering to help. She and Molly move in with him as he schools her in improving her medical knowledge but during a busy night on A and E Brigitte, who has had a drink, almost loses a patient. She persuades Cath to back her up, the alternative being a full investigation which will prove bad for them both. Meanwhile Karl is disturbed by a conversation with Sam Kelly and decides to follow Cath to Edinburgh.

Next morning Cath keeps the previous night's events from Andy and initially hesitates to support Brigitte but an investigator arrives following a complaint from the patient's partner and she covers for Brigitte. An explosion at a chemical plant floods the casualty department and tests Cath to the limit though she succeeds in saving a badly burned victim. When Karl turns up to confront her Cath agrees to return to Sheffield with Molly but Andy's intervention leads to a situation which threatens her future both professionally and in her relationship with Andy.
