Linda Stone engages Nick and Sylvie to find the truth about her deceased husband. It seems that the FBI has identified, through fingerprints, Stone who was just shot to death in the classy restaurant that he owned. Linda explains that though it is unusual that such a bold shooting take place in front of so many witnesses, the real mystery lies in the fact that her husband was killed in a fiery car crash about a year previously and, with him, evaporated any chance of recovering the three million dollars that he stole. Nick begins by questioning Jenny Nolan, Stone's current girlfriend, however, is unsatisfied with her claims to know nothing of his previous life or the existence of the stolen money. Nick the enlists Spider to aid in a B and E intended to unearth secreted information that might shed some light on the missing millions.

Prior to her departure, Sylvie briefs Spider, in the Slaughter office, on his need to pick up daily phone messages and meet with Alicia Simmons with the intent of putting off her case until Friday, if possible. Immediately after she leaves, Spider lays claim to the office, donning one of Nick's shirts and playing with a pistol. Enter, the beautiful Alicia who is convinced that Spider is Nick and after a couple of feeble attempts to state otherwise, he eventually succumbs to her pleas for help to recover the emeralds that the 'fat man' has stolen from her father. Their adventure has begun. Meanwhile, at Hawkwell, Nick and Sylvie are settling into their roles. Sylvie meets the hard-as-nails English teacher Lyle Glasco while Nick develops a relationship with Sandy, the murdered girl's best friend. It is then that they encounter Sgt. Gregory who is disappointed to learn that they have been hired to investigate and admonishes them to stay out of his way. Having overheard this exchange, French teacher Paula Keller arranges to meet Nick at her apartment at eleven that night. Arriving at the appointed time, Nick and Sylvie discover that Paula has been brutally murdered before she could pass on what she knows. Sgt. Gregory soon arrests Jimmy, the mentally slow school janitor that Nick has befriended, charging him in both murders.

Julie, now back on the job, only reluctantly accepts involvement of the private investigators, insisting that they not interfere with her research. An attempt on Nick's life fails when Napoleon, Julie's favored dolphin, brings her to rescue Nick who is lying unconscious on the ocean floor. Then, this already confusing case gets a nasty twist with the murder of Matt Grady. Nick and Sylvie are up to the challenge as they proceed to unravel the sordid facts.

Joey Gibson is rifling through drawers in an upstairs bedroom of a luxury home in her latest break-and-enter conquest when she is interrupted by a man and a woman arguing in the main hall. Joey hides as the couple continue the dispute while climbing the stairs towards her very location, with the woman threatening to go to the police. Joey is right beside the pair when the man grabs a candlestick and beats the woman to death. She pushes by the surprised man and is narrowly able to escape, leaving behind her acquisitions and her ID. She immediately goes to Nick Slaughter who, it turns out, has been her benefactor and has pulled her out of scrape-after-scrape since she was sixteen. Nick takes her to his associate, Sylvie Girard to hide. Nick then contacts Sgt. Gregory and together with other members of the Key Mariah police force, search the house in question. Once inside they find Doreen who says she has been there for hours hoping to surprise her boyfriend, owner of the house. She states emphatically that there has been no murder, there is no body, no blood, and no sign of any kind of a scuffle. Nick and the police depart from the scene with only Nick still believing Joey's story.
