After graduation, three Yale study friends, Chicago Cubs fans from L.A. who shared a house, plan a last wild summer before entering professional life. In New York, Will Traveler gets his buds to pull a prank in the president Drexler collection of the Metropolitan art museum: skating trough like madmen while he tapes it on video. Once they are outside, Will cellphones them he's sorry he had to do this- and a big bomb explodes inside the museum. Tyler Fog, son of business tycoon Carlton, who was condemned in Irangate, and fresh lawyer Jay Burchell, see the tape on TV, and are shocked to hear the FBI name them as presumed terrorist bombers. Jay believes Will was a victim too, but then finds every trace of their mate has disappeared, everywhere; the FBI finds a charcoaled body in the explosion rubble, presumably Will's. Tyler took his dad's advice to withdraw a small fortune and run, but gets arrested by FBI agents Marlow and Borjes; Jay was just in time to bluff he planted a second bomb to force the FBI to let Tyler go, but the agents catch both of them minutes later; now a mysterious man, the Porter, blows up the arrest van and sets them free.

The Retreat

Having made it out of the city Jay and Tyler elude police and seek refuge at the remote estate of Tyler's father, Carlton Fog. He has hired a powerful company to get the boys out of the country. Tyler trusts his father but Jay is not certain that Carlton or their agent Ellington can be trusted. Meanwhile the FBI begins to question Kimberly.

Jay Burchell buys clothes on the NY flee market, but a vendor vaguely seems to recognize him and phones the FBI, which sent Borjes and Marlow to investigate John Ellington's corps at Tolman airfield, killed by the Home Land Security Agent. The boys die their hair red- no, Jay cleverly made it appear so. Tyler wants to pass the Canadian border, but Jay steals a car to return to Yale and look for evidence of Will. Carlton Fog proclaims Tyler's innocence on TV, promising help for a fair trial; agent in charge Chambers questions him and demands his full cooperation, under threat. Jay drives to Tyler's college ex Nell's place, as he stored some boxes there with Will, to prove his existence- Will's are all gone, even fakes planted in Tyler's handwriting, but there are floor-plans for the Drexler etcetera, she denies any complicity and helps them pack. Tyler remembers Will had a study booth in a library. They get away just before Borjes arrives, and despite countless wanted-fliers get into that library, Jay breaks into the booth Tyler believes was Will's, apparently empty, except a stash under the roof, with over $10,000 in an envelope and some coded transfer, plus a loaded gun; then the FBI finds and chases them, but they escape trough ventilation shafts. The Home Land Security Agent receives all Kim's pictures with Will from an undercover man, and responds ominously 'you know what to do'...

The Out

Jay and Tyler continue their investigation into Will's past in his hometown of Deer Harbor, Maine. They find their first clue in a bookstore with an ironic name 'Have Books...Will Travel.' The store is run by a young woman named Maya whom Jay believes knows more than she says. Meanwhile the FBI bring in Jay's mother for questioning. Jay and Tyler barely escape another attempt on their lives, the mysterious Porter is still trailing them and the unnamed Homeland Security Agent is still tracking their every move.

The Tells

The boys see Will being overpowered by abductors, jump in with their mysterious black savior the Porter to chase that van. Tyler realizes he tracked them via his watch; they are shot at. Jay trusts the key which Maya said he would return for, estimated over 100 years old, will tell them about Traveler. Will awakes with a leg wound, gets a meal from Kate whom he didn't know; she confirms to be from 'Hometown' and questions him about the museum bomb; he denies to have saved his college mates, saying an unknown man with a gun overpowered him in the museum, she stun-guns the kid, says Joseph sent the second man mistrusting him, insists he asked for his assignment two years earlier, yet pulled the fire alarm. She's relieved it ain't worse after he confesses to feel for the boys, hits him for denying to know about 'the painting'. The FBI finds the burned corps was not Traveler, arrests Murden but he escapes. A Boston tour guide knows the key is from a Boston Hall research cabinet, in the 1807 Harvard library, where the boys find the stash containing Will's papers, money and false names- passports, payments for his school expenses by a firm Three Continents neither knows, Jay decides to try his New York address. The Homeland agent calls Kate and orders Will's 'file closed' after his answers; she pressures Will with Maya's voice in mortal anguish, now he admits he doctored the bomb, cut out and stole a painting as insurance, says it's in a Grand Central Station locker, beaten after another lie corrects it's in a car trunk on LaGuardia airport and gives the license plate, then she plays the next recording: Maya was killed two hours ago- Will breaks lose, stabs the bitch to death and escapes from the computer park; Kate's accomplice dies from a bomb he planted in the laGuardia car.

The Trader

The boys are back in Queens and walk to Manhattan to investigate Three Continents Investment; the headquarters is nearly empty, papers shredded and computers wiped, but ticker tape still points to Holloway Insurance, involved in insider trading; the boys escape a guard. In Dear Harbor, Will beats the agent left at Maya's place to kill him and sends him back announcing he's coming. In Boston Hall he finds his stash nearly empty except fake IDs, buys with dodgy Jimmy a gun and learns Alex's whereabouts, his former training partner, has to shoot her in self-defense. Tyler decides to turn to their college mate Eddie Hahn, whom he got a job with his dad; Jay's gun makes him show the trading records for Holloway, and help identify the suspicious Hadley Foundation, founded by Tyler's dad Carlton Fog, yet he needs to hear it from him and leaves, driver Charlie lets him wait in the tycoon's limousine -ignoring the man Carlton talked to, Jack, is the Homeland Security brain- and is told to step out with just a few seconds headway on the FBI which constantly tails Carlton. Jay locks Eddie in his apartment and goes to Kim Doherty's, but sees a moving van. The FBI was bumbling since the witness escape, while Borjes discovers some close colleague must be dirty, but lucky with toll booth photos is in time to find Tyler...

The Reunion

The FBI chases Tyler on foot from Hahn's place trough Upper Eastside NY, he gets out in a bus and hooks up with a bar maid. In Boston, Will manhandles a weapon supplier but even a fake hanging merely squeezes a vague description out of him. After studying the video of Maya's killing, Will questions tattoo artist Ed Carter, who identifies the killer's tattoo as a certain Martin and gives his hotel address; Will tails and fights him, makes him admit the orders to kill come from Freed, then shoots him anyway. Jay hides in a motel. FBI agent Jan Marlow questions Kim at home, who seems to know nothing, promises to protect Jay's life if he turns himself in; a note on takeaway he sends her serves as cover for a message where to meet Jay, they make love; she has a recording of Will accepting his mates will get hurt as the Drexler bombing is part of a larger plan "in the nation's interest". A traffic surveillance camera recorded Tyler, but the FBI loses his trace; the barmaid and he have sex, Carlton Fog says in the paper he tried to help his son Tyler. Just then Chambers is called away by Robert Cole, then questions but commends Borjes for using his NSA contact Haley about Otis Whaley, suggesting not to risk his career like Marlow did. Tyler identifies on press photos the mystery man who talked to Carlton and traded Holloway stock as Jack Freed from Homeland Security, a former FBI deputy Director, and calls Kim, then the barmaid realizes who he is. Jay surprises Marlow, talks holding the gun, gives her Holloway data and some of Will's fake passports; she disarms him, Kim causes a power failure so they can run. Marlow catches up, Tyler is there too, holding a gun to a cop's head as he believes her to be in the conspiracy, then Will appears and aims his gun at Marlow.

The Exchange

Tyler and Jay are stunned Will turns up promising to help hem, but as he disarms Marlow, gamble he's their best bet to get their lives back. Chamber's team chases them and pulls Marlow off the case in favor of Borjes. Jay first fights with Will in a Chinatown store, then Tyler spots Will bleeds. Will wires an SUV and makes Tyler drive to get his mini car from the FBI car impound and tells Jack Freed recruited him for Homeland Security ordering both boys to be killed in the Drexler museum bombing. Kim Doherty is jailed for not talking. Jay penetrates the impound but the car is driven off with him hiding in it, followed by the duo; he finds the stolen painting inside and falls, Will manages to pick him up, they escape. The trio decides to try to expose Freed, rather then kill him as Will planned. Marlow questions Joseph Lindon, a Fallbrook Dunn consultant, who gets a call and shoots at her, only to get killed. Will proposes Freed to 'exchange' the painting and promises him 'more'. Borjes finds proof to set out to arrest Carlton Fog for harboring his fugitive son, Chambers concurs but Carlton is shot by Otis Whaley who runs for Borjes, who is shot himself by- Chambers. Now Marlow learns Lindon's last caller was Chambers. At the exchange, by pretending to turn on his mates as agreed, Will tricks Freed into admitting the Drexler bomb was about fear and control on tape. When the trio intends to turn it over to the press, Freed offers, in exchange for his freedom, the full truth and the identity of the 'fourth branch' Carlton would sacrifice even his son for...
