Fifteen year old Alex Bowker is stabbed and dies whilst surgeon Jon Allerton is operating on him. The boy's father Dan, already facing redundancy, blames Jon for failing to save Alex and approaches him, inviting him to the funeral. This proves to be an uncomfortable experience for Jon when Dan makes an aggressive accusation against him, leading to a fight. Some weeks later Jon arrives at his hospital to find Dan is working there.

Dan lodges a complaint against Jon, for being drunk during Alex's operation, but it is dismissed and Dan is further incensed when his wife Susie takes Jon's part. His obsession, including a visit to Jon's psychiatrist wife Lisa, affects his work and he is dismissed, to Susie's anger. Now growing increasingly paranoid he starts a dirty tricks campaign against Jon and his family.
