It's Sarah and Tammy's wedding day at a Palm Springs resort, the ceremony to be officiated by Rabbi Fein, despite Tammy being a WASP. Maura sees someone at the ceremony she would rather not see, namely her sister Bryna. Maura has to decide how to deal not only with judgmental and angry Bryna, but also their mother Rose, who Maura has not seen since her transformation into a woman. Josh is still angry at Ali for telling Raquel that he is a sex addict. Believing Ali's motivation being a disdain for Raquel, Josh decides on a measure to diffuse the situation, which may backfire on him. And someone else at the proceedings seems to be emotionally elsewhere. That person has to decide how best to deal with those feelings, both emotionally and legally.

Flicky-Flicky Thump-Thump

Sarah and Len are dealing with the court-ordered custody of their children, which affects them both in a way they were not anticipating. In addition, Sarah is trying to cope with her decision to break up with Tammy. Colton informs Josh of a decision he, Rita and his parents have come to, which will affect Josh's life. Ali reconciles with Syd, their estrangement since their frank discussion regarding Syd's feelings about their friendship. And after being kicked out of her condo, Maura is now living with Shelly temporarily, with all Maura's possessions in a storage container outside Shelly's unit. Maura and Shelly connect in ways that are somewhat familiar and somewhat new, which may be more than what Maura would like to admit with which she is comfortable. With all these goings-on, Josh is hosting a pool party at the house for his industry friends to introduce his new find, namely Bianca's band, with Josh's family also invited. An unexpected attendee ends up overtaking the proceedings.

New World Coming

Maura stays overnight at Davina and Shea's, a comment by the latter which piques Maura's interest. Maura also reencounters someone from her past, and in the process has to confront what she did as a he in his repression of women. That encounter is the result of helping Ali, who is thinking about entering graduate school in Gender Studies. That issue becomes even more personal as Ali and Syd move their friendship into a new realm. Sarah is feeling at a loss with no significant other in her life, she jealous of the time Len is spending with others, including Barb as the kids have their play dates together, especially as Barb has no interest whatsoever in striking up anything with her ex's now ex. As such, Sarah goes within her mind and her past to satisfy herself. And Colton has moved in with Josh, creating that instant family, especially as Colton wants to consider and call him his dad. The issue of Colton is on top of Raquel being pregnant. Being unmarried and pregnant ends up being an issue for her especially in her profession. Josh vows to her that he is on top of the issue. However, an action by Raquel may end up creating a rift in their relationship.

Cherry Blossoms

Although she knows that they are no longer married, Shelly, feeling a reconnection with who was her husband, begins to feel neglected by Maura. Maura begins to think about her sexual life as she starts hormone treatments and is asked by her physician about her thoughts as to ever undergoing sexual reassignment surgery. That issue is highlighted as she has an encounter with Cynthia, a woman she meets at a restaurant bar. Sarah continues to feel overwhelmed especially as the kids' school undergoes Spirit Week, culminating with an evening gala. Things get worse and worse for her as the week progresses, leading to her being prone to falling back into old habits. Now that Colton has moved in with Josh and Raquel, Josh, because of a comment by Colton, believes they as a collective should include Rita into their lives. This move may not sit well with Raquel. And Ali, with Syd by her side, decides to visit her maternal grandmother Rose, who she has not seen in quite some time.

After speaking with Davina and Shea and seeing more about their past, Maura comes a little closer to making a decision about her future. Ali take steps to ensure she is accepted into Leslie Mackinaw's Gender Studies program at UCLA. Sarah continues to feel lost in her life, which is only exacerbated by the free therapy session she won through the gala raffle. Sarah turns to old comforts to cope. And Colton informs Josh and Raquel that his adoptive family is coming to Los Angeles out of necessity regarding Colton's schooling, and wants to meet them. Josh, below the surface, is concerned in feeling the need to make a good impression or else, while Raquel wants them just to be who they are. The meeting gets out of everyone's control, in the process everyone making decisions about what they are truly feeling about Colton living with Josh and Raquel. That meeting is also affected by and affects Maura, who makes a decision about his life with Shelly.

Bulnerable

Maura moving in temporarily with Davina coincides with Davina's boyfriend, Sal, being released from prison. Beyond Maura wanting to give the two of them some space especially in their need to get reacquainted biblically, Maura takes the opportunity of having a man like Sal to get yet another perspective of the entire trans issue. With Maura having moved out, Shelly is feeling abandoned yet again, that abandonment exacerbated by Josh confronting her about the entire issue surrounding Colton. Sarah, on a date in with Dr. Steve, hopes to explore the sexual fantasy she has been having lately about Mr. Irons. Josh notices what looks to be a rash on Raquel's body, which they hope is not related to the pregnancy. The result leads to Josh and Raquel discussing their immediate future. And Ali, working on her admissions essay, decides to ask Leslie for advice. Ali takes the request to a point that she believes will place her on Leslie's good side concerning the application.

The Book of Life

It's Yom Kippur, a time for apologies and forgiveness, which may not always come to pass. Maura receives support from Sal, which places her on Davina's bad side in wanting to be a true friend. Shelly accepts the attentions of someone she meets to replace the loss she feels from Maura no longer being there for her. Sarah looks for forgiveness from Tammy, while she issues a set of somewhat seeming incompatible wants from Dr. Steve. Raquel is unequivocal in her intentions with Josh following the loss of their baby, she who does not care what he tells people about why she is no longer in his life. And Ali and Syd try to clear the air about Ali's overnight stay at Leslie's. All these issues may come to a head as Ali and Syd host a Yom Kippur dinner for their families to break the fast.

Oscillate

Turning his attention back to work following Raquel breaking up with him, Josh goes shopping for a new van with and for the band. In the process, Josh, in an unexpected and inopportune moment, allows the emotions of his life to take over. Shelly shows how having Buzz around has affected her life, those changes which are noticed by Sarah and Ali. In continuing to explain her latest encounter with Leslie, Ali digs herself into a deeper hole with Syd. Ali also learns why nothing happened with Leslie the night she stayed over. Maura takes indirect and direct steps to reconcile with Davina. Instead, she gets closer to Shea and hopes to get closer to her daughters in a feminine sense. And in flashbacks, Grandma Rose's life just prior to emigrating to the US is shown, that life which was not devoid of sexual identity and trans issues of its own.

Man on the Land

Maura, Sarah and Ali have arrived at the Idyllwild Festival. Beyond Ali wanting to spend time with Leslie, especially seeing as to the state of her and Syd's relationship, none of the three of Maura, Sarah and Ali know what to expect or look for except what most of the women at the festival want: the sense of it being a safe place. Maura befriends Vicki, one of the vendors who works as a cheese monger by day. Instead of attending one of the new ageist type seminars as she was planning, Sarah comes across something else that piques her interest more and which she had fantasized about since her break-up with Tammy. She also runs into someone from her past who only knows her as a suburban wife and mom. And in finding Leslie, Ali discovers something about her that may make her more accessible in a personal sense. Both Maura and Ali also individually discover something fundamental about the festival which could place Maura at risk, she who has to decide how best to handle the situation, both proactively and reactively.

Grey Green Brown & Copper

Leaving Idyllwild without her daughters, Maura ends up spending some time with Vicki, which allows her to explore another side of herself. The Idyllwild experience results in Sarah and Ali being more centered, that new feeling which they share with Josh. However, that new feeling also leads to more questions for all three of them. Without Raquel, a baby on the way or Colton, Josh turns to Buzz, who has some surprising answers for him. Beyond still going to see Pony professionally, Sarah owns up to a past incident with Len. And Ali receives two intriguing propositions from Leslie, only one which she can accept if she accepts any at all. The Idyllwild experience also leads to both Maura and Ali independently needing to revisit their past, which they end up doing together.
