Adult siblings Sarah, Josh and Ali each receive a telephone call from their father Morton who wants them to have dinner with him at the longtime family home - where Morton lives and which he got to keep in the divorce settlement from the kids' mother, Shelly - so that he can tell them as a collective some big news. The three are rather nonplussed even in their speculation that the news may be something serious like Morton having some major health issue like cancer, which if be the case successful music producer Josh openly talks about what to him is the more important aspect of inheritance. At dinner, Morton cannot tell his children the real reason for convening them, despite a vow made at a support group meeting to do so, as Morton can see that it's not the right time in the three's self-absorbed lives. What Morton does not know about his children's current lives: Sarah has just run into an old flame from college, Tammy, about who she has never told her husband Len; Josh is in a serious relationship with one of his much younger clients, Kaya, who in turn does not know about his extracurricular activities with someone from his past; and Ali, once again between jobs and broke, uses the borrowed money from her father to deal with her body image issues. What Morton ultimately does tell them at dinner, which is only an associated issue to the main event, has its own repercussions as it sends certain shock waves among the three.

Maura embraces her new journey, but nothing about life as a woman is easy -- making friends, finding a new community, and above all, coming out to her children. Sarah introduces her husband (Rob Huebel) to her ex-girlfriend Tammy (Melora Hardin). Josh pays a visit to his ex-babysitter Rita, as Ali gets closer to her trainer.

It's the day of the talent show, and Sarah has convinced her siblings to attend, which is important for Maura. In the lead up to show, Sarah checks in with Tammy on the renovations for the house, before heading off with Josh to take advantage of the lax regulations to get some "medication" which in turn allows her to get high before the start of the show. Josh has his first date with Raquel, which doesn't go quite according to plan. Raquel, however, plans on making a romantic dinner for the two of them while Josh goes to the show. And Ali, sporting a new look, has a date with Dale, who she brings to the show on the last minute remembrance during the date about the promise to attend the show. The applause that Davina and Maura receive for their performance is bittersweet for Maura, who turns to someone from her past for additional support. Following the show, Josh gets sidetracked by his self-absorption in a certain matter which leaves Raquel waiting for her dinner date.

In a flashback, Mort escapes with friend Mark (Bradley Whitford) to a cross-dressing retreat in the woods, and becomes captivated with a very accepting woman named Connie (Michaela Watkins). Left alone after canceling her Bat Mitzvah, 13-year-old Ali finds trouble with an older man at the beach.

Maura finds solace with ex-wife Shelly, and the two hatch a plot to help Ed realize his wishes. Sarah spends time with her ex-husband and begins to question their breakup, while Raquel finally breaks through to Josh.
