Hopeless at dating, unemployed and still living with parents Lesley and Ashley Tom meets Ellen, who has just dumped boyfriend Luke, when she accidentally knocks him off his bike. He recalls having seen her the night before sitting on a wheelie bin and believes their meetings to be decided by fate, especially as she also turns out to be the life model at his art class. Then, to confirm his belief, they find themselves on the same tube station platform during a bomb scare.

Fleeing his warring parents Tom takes Ellen to the cinema but lies about having his own place, a car and a job in publishing - being exposed by Ellen's flatmate Hermione. To make amends he invites her to Welsh-Thai fusion restaurant Fershangwenthl but, having been arrested for accidentally ramming a charity van, she arrives late, to find he has fallen victim to a food allergy.

Tom is hoping to give Ellen a birthday surprise but when his credit card is rejected at the perfume counter he decides to cook her a lasagne at his parents' house. Unfortunately it is not a perfect evening as Ellen, subject to a curfew after being found guilty of road rage, leaves early, on the way out having a devastating encounter with Ashley's pet snails.

Aware that Ellen loves costume drama 'Sharpe' Tom invites her to a country house but unfortunately his parents and sister Maeve come too whilst Ellen brings Hermione, who invites Luke. When Ellen's car breaks down Tom vies with Luke to mend it - and loses out. However, after he has imagined himself as Sharpe taking on the enemy he is still able to win Ellen over by taking her to a very romantic place.

On the hottest day of the year Ellen and Tom are keen to have sex and, having seen her police form from her court case, he assumes that she is turned on by uniforms and borrows his father's when he visits her. However she still has an electronic tag on her ankle and sends him away. By the time it is removed Tom has accidentally taken his sister's sleeping draught and is out for the count.

Before Ellen can tell Tom that she has a criminal record Ashley finds out and informs his son. When Tom admits that he knows about it Ellen is determined to leave town but first goes to say goodbye to her long-lost grandfather, Ern. Determined not to let her go Tom uses Ern's homing pigeons to track her down.
