Eric receives word that his son has been badly beaten at Chapel Grove and is currently in hospital. He gives in to the threats, and agrees to help smuggle drugs to spare his son further harm. Mark considers writing to the wife of the man he killed, and finds that his new cellmate is one of his former students - who accuses him of being a bad teacher. However, he may have a chance to put his skills to use by helping another inmate to learn to read.

Having had to watch his father's funeral by camera in the chapel, Mark bitterly finishes his term. Given his exemplary behavior, he's invited to be speaker at a rehabilitation seminar. The prison drug boss wants him to pick up contraband, but he decides against it last moment, even that means another vicious beating, saved from the worst by his giant literacy pupil. Even his mediation can't help a silent fellow convict who always refused to confront his victims' closest kin, as turns out the fatal fight was over a symbol but actually among closet gay lovers. Eric gets caught with contraband drugs and is arrested, fearing the worst as ex-officer. Released, Mark visits Eric being processed in, and finally meets the previously viciously-hostile mother of his drunk driving victim.
