A Man About the House

In the debut episode of the series set in Santa Monica, California, Janet and Chrissy wake up the morning after their friend Eleanor's farewell party and Chrissy enters to find a man, Jack Tripper, sleeping in the tub, and runs to get Janet. Jack is startled awake and discovers he's soaking wet while Janet holds a ladle out like a gun, asking "Who are you?" in her short-lived New York accent. Jack introduces himself and tells them he was one of the party crashers. They get Jack out of the bathroom and offer to dry his clothes in the oven and let him wear one of their frilly robes until his clothes are dry. Chrissy gets the idea to have Jack move in because he's been staying at the YMCA and a man would be great protection for them. After initial reluctance, Janet goes for the idea. Meanwhile, landlord Stanley Roper is awake downstairs and still bothered about all the noise from the previous night's party; when he goes up to complain, he finds Jack there. He runs to get his wife Helen, who doesn't believe him but she goes just the same. Stanley (more than Helen) does not approve of the idea of Jack living with two girls. Jack goes with Chrissy to the kitchen for his clothes and offers to leave so they don't get in trouble. When they come back out in the living room, Stanley and Helen have suddenly changed their minds. Jack asks Janet how she talked them into it and after short explanation gives him the upshot: "Oh, I also told him that you were gay!" So it begins.

And Mother Makes Four

On the day Jack is to move in, Chrissy's mother stops by for a visit. Chrissy hasn't told her mother about Jack, so the girls try to keep Jack hidden down at the Regal Beagle pub. Unfortunately, it gets late and Chrissy's mother decides to stay the night! A fed up Jack decides to go home anyway and tries to sleep in a chair in the girls' room.

Roper's Niece

Stanley Roper's niece has come to visit him and Helen, but she becomes bored. Feeling that he's a "safe" choice from any fooling around with her, Stanley gets her set up on a date with Jack and gives him $50. Jack says no, but after seeing Karen, says yes and misses Janet's birthday party. Later, while Janet & Chrissy are having cake upstairs, Karen throws herself at Jack in the Roper's living room and Stanley walks in! Will Jack be able to smooth things out between him, the girls and Mr. Roper and be able to stay?

No Children, No Dogs

Jack is suckered into taking a little puppy off the hands of his friend Larry. Unfortunately, this breaks Roper's rules of "no pets or children." Jack must then find a way to hide the pup until he can find someone else to take care of it. In the meantime, Chrissy begins sleepwalking. Plus, Mrs. Roper's birthday is coming up and Stanley must find a present for her.

It's Only Money

Jack, Janet and Chrissy discover that their rent money for Mr. Roper turns up missing. Thinking they were robbed, they've asked a police officer to explain the situation to Roper, but to no avail. Therefore, the kids try to concoct a plan to make up for the money. Meanwhile, Mr. Roper wants to invite the kids out to dinner, at the urging of Mrs. Roper. When he visits the kids' apartment to extend the invitation, they sneak out, thinking that Mr. Roper is wanting to collect the rent money.
