One day, Henry goes to the Sodor Steamworks to be repainted. Kevin is extremely busy when he is asked to fetch Henry's paint. No-one knows it, but Henry has been repainted with special glow-in-the-dark paint which is used to paint railway signs. Henry is happy with his new coat and leaves, completely unaware of the mix-up. That night, as Henry is travelling along, he begins to glow a fluorescent green. Thomas is finishing his work for the day when he sees Henry and runs away in terror as he thinks it's a ghost train. Thomas tells Gordon his experience, but Gordon just scoffs. Then, Henry approaches James who is waiting at a junction. James is terrified by the glowing engine coming towards him and reverses out of the way. Henry is very puzzled. As James comes back out of hiding, he shouts to warn Gordon about the "ghost train". Again, Gordon thinks it's all nonsense...until he pulls up alongside Henry with his new paint. Now, Gordon is as terrified as James and Thomas and runs away in fright. Back at Tidmouth Sheds, the engines are discussing the situation when Gordon arrives. Gordon admits to seeing the ghostly train, but insists that it didn't scare him. Down at Brendam Docks, Cranky, Salty and Porter are frightened by Henry's ghostly new look. It's not long before Cranky realises it's Henry and Porter questions why he is glowing. Henry is confused until Cranky gives him a mirror to look at himself with. The penny drops and Henry now knows why the engines ran from him. By the time Henry arrives back at Tidmouth Sheds after pulling the Flying Kipper, it is morning and he no longer glows. Henry goes to confess that he had been the ghost train, but when Percy asks if he'd seen the spooky engine, Gordon says that Henry would've been shaking in his smokebox. James then says that they all know what a scaredy engine Henry can be and Gordon brings up Henry's old phobia of rain. Henry is deeply offended by this and says he has seen the ghost train and it didn't frighten him at all. The next evening, all the engines make sure they are back in their sheds before nightfall. Percy tries to get another engine to take his mail train, but no-one wants to go out with a ghost engine about. Then, the Fat Controller arrives and says that if Henry can be out pulling the Flying Kipper, surely one of the engines can take the mail train. The Fat Controller then tells the engines, for the last time, that there is no such thing as a ghost engine. As he's speaking, Henry puffs in, glowing brightly again. The engines all hide in their berths and the Fat Controller dives into a coal bunker. The engines are shocked to find out that it's just Henry and ask why he didn't tell them sooner. Henry says that he was going to, but they all laughed at him. The Fat Controller orders Henry to return to the Steamworks in the morning to be repainted again and says that since Henry was the only engine working that night, he will be getting a "glowing report".
