The episode introduced Thomas, with six small wheels, a short stumpy funnel, a short stumpy boiler and a short stumpy dome, he likes to tease other engines, especially Gordon, one day, Gordon was resting on a siding, Thomas whistles at him and wakes him up, and Thomas needs to fetch Gordon's coaches, Gordon pulls Thomas all the way to Wellsworth, and Thomas learns a lesson not to tease other engines.

Thomas's now fed up with his job shunting coaches and wants to see the world. Edward kindly offers Thomas some freight cars, while he'll shunt coaches for him. Thomas happily agreed. Edward warns Thomas to be careful cause the freight cars often play tricks on the other engines who are not used to them, but Thomas's too excited to listen. So Thomas prepares his train and gets coupled up. He starts to pull, but the cars are not ready. Thomas just ignores them as he puffs out of the station stubbornly. Thomas goes faster and faster passing through Henry's Tunnel and junction along the journey, but the increased speed makes the cars very cross. Thomas eventually slows downs as he came upon Gordon's Hill, but as he reached the top, the freight cars begin to push Thomas down the hill. He loses control until he swerved into the goods yard and stops in front of the buffers, narrowing preventing an accident. Sir Topham Hatt, having seen everything, questions why he came in so fast. Thomas explains that the cars pushed him, while Sir Topham Hatt advises Thomas that he has a lot to learn about freight cars and that after pushing them about in the yard for a few weeks, he will know much more about them as Edward. And then he will be a Really Useful Engine.

James' brakes catch fire and his freight-trucks push him out of control, forcing Thomas to use a breakdown-train to help him and to deal with the trucks that he has gotten used to.

James enjoys his day on the island of Sodor, but he pulls his train roughly and caused a hole in the coaches break pipe. The only way to mend it is a passenger's bootlace and James learns a very valuable lesson that he must never bump coaches again.

Determined to be a useful engine after he damaged one of his coaches, Sir Topham Hatt assigns James to pull some freight cars. James has trouble with the freight cars while trying to climb up Gordon's Hill, but he managed to make the troublesome train behave, finally earns Sir Topham Hatt's respect and he allows James to keep his red coat.

The other engines don't believe Henry when he says he's sick, but soon even the crew notices and try to figure out what to do for him. It turns out the problem can be solved if a special kind of coal can be gotten for him.

Henry collides with a goods train while pulling "The Flying Kipper". The Fat Controller sends him to Crewe for repairs and he comes back with a new shape and a larger firebox meaning that he no longer needs special coal.

Gordon is jealous of Henry's restructure so tries to spoil his good mood by saying he shouldn't whistle. He also has to put up with a group of children attacking him.

Toby, a tram-engine with little work, gets a chance to spend time with people who truly appreciate him, like the Fat Controller whom he doesn't know, but soon faces his railway's closing down.

James calls Toby and Henrietta "dirty objects" because of their shabby look. He tells them that you will never see his paint dirty. However, it's Toby who has the last laugh when James collides with some tar wagons.

Gordon scorns Henry for the accident that wasn't his fault, but Henry still gets to pull the Express, to his jealousy. Gordon doesn't want to pull freight-cars, so tries to jam the turntable, and sinks himself.

Thomas still likes to tease Gordon for forcing himself into the ditch. When he disobediently decides to explore a mine past the Danger zone and falls, Gordon is called in to dig him out.

At Christmas, Thomas remembers a friend who saved him and Toby a year ago, so decides with the others to throw her a party in return. But he and Toby have the hard job of trying to help her out of her snowbound house.
