Episode 9
Late spring/Easter. Across Scotland, farmers are welcoming a new generation of lambs. Bobby and Ann enlist some multi-generational family help to bring 400 pregnant ewes spread over 2,000 acres of hillside down from the hills into the farm for lambing season. Mel and Martin experience a severe return of a late winter just as the 520 pregnant ewes are getting ready to deliver over the next 3 weeks, moving into the lambing shed so they can manage it completely on their own with a 24 hour watch cycle, sleeping no more than 2 hours at a time, delivering lambs and nursing orphans in a "pet pen", with one especially high risk lamb that needs a miracle. John Scott is already 3 weeks into his lambing season with 4,000 ewes, so he's starting to deal with the care of young lambs while continuing to deliver new lambs; he enlists the help of his young sons alongside Emma from Australia, gaining help while passing on experience to the next generation. Sandy still has 3 weeks or so before his lambing season starts so he spends his time on another crofting requirement: weaving; he's preparing the house with cleaning and curtain-making for some visitors coming soon who are eager to experience some of the drifting lifestyle.
Episode 10
Second wettest spring in Scotland since records began is starting to come to an end, though different areas have different daily experiences. Sybil and George bring the pregnant cows to a field closer to the farmhouse to keep an eye on them, with special attention to Julia K., an injured cow with special needs during her recovery, while Sybil plans a family celebration for George's 50th birthday, and reminisce with visiting family. Martin enjoys having his cows and calves in a covered shed due to the rainy weather and calling them by name, despite the extra costs required, and recalls the story of Jumbo's troubled birthing process and the victory that followed. John Scott explains the emotional attachment farmers acquire for the individual animals on a farm, while dealing with a mysterious situation in which this years calves are generally larger than normal, causing danger to both mother and heifer, and he calls out vet Paco for assistance for one particularly difficult (and dramatic) pregnancy. Bobby and Ann Lennox hold an open day for the public to come by and see the animals in person, and maybe even get to witness a live birth.
