The River Herring is one tough bait fish. They can travel thousands of miles, the fiercest avoiding predators along the way. But they are no match for industrial fishing fleets. These massive boats, called midwater trawlers, catch millions of these important forage fish every year. Since 1970, river herring populations have declined 93%. This is bad news for the predators that eat river herring, like tuna, cod, striped bass, sea-birds, dolphins, and whales. Putting fishery observers on industrial river herring trawlers can help restore river herring populations.
