Ragged and barefoot, 26-year old Ivy Moxam is found wandering the streets of Bristol, 13 years after she disappeared and is interviewed by detectives Lisa Merchant and Elliot Carne before being reunited with her parents, Christina and her estranged husband Angus, who find themselves besieged by the press, as does her old headmaster Henry Stone. Ivy claims she had skipped school to meet her friend Eloise and was abducted by a man she knew as Leonard, who imprisoned her in a cellar though the house in question is empty and the police believe Leonard was a false name for a man who worked at Ivy's school. Her boyfriend Tim is over-joyed to see her but her sister Emma is not convinced that this really is Ivy.

As another young girl, Phoebe Tarl, is abducted the police interview Ivy in the hopes that she can help, Mark White, her kidnapper being the prime suspect. At the same time Lisa falls out with Elliott as she suggests that Ivy was a more willing victim than she claims, based on CCTV footage of a shopping outing. Ivy finds it difficult to catch up with the years she has missed despite her parents' attempts to appear united. Her chief means of support is Tim - until she realizes that he too has moved on without telling her.

Following Tim's bombshell Ivy has a scary confrontation with Phoebe's father which does nothing for the family's confidence in the police. However the police are involved when Ivy gets a letter purportedly from White, whom Lisa still believes Ivy is protecting. They also discover that White has a half-brother Dylan Hawthorne, who contacted him on the day Ivy disappeared. Tired of being questioned Ivy starts to bond again with sister Emma, to the exclusion of Emma's boyfriend Craig and Angus. Meanwhile Lisa makes a disturbing discovery in the kidnap house.

Having thrown Angus out Christina briefly turns to headmaster Henry for comfort. Following the discovery of a corpse at the kidnap house the police bring Ivy in for questioning and discover that the dead man is White's half-brother Dylan, a man with learning difficulties who tried to act as Ivy's protector. She is released without charge and Christina takes her husband back. Meanwhile Tim confesses to his wife that he still loves Ivy and Elliott gets a sinister phone call, putting ivy on the spot.

Ivy agrees to meet White in a crowded shopping centre and persuades him to let Phoebe go. However she loses police surveillance and is once again taken by White, Lisa and Elliott being injured in a fruitless car chase, wondering why Ivy allowed herself to be captured. White is disturbingly gentle with her, rather than bullying, but Ivy has escaped once before and when the opportunity arises again she is going to take it.
